If so, are you pressing the DOF preview button on your camera by accident? This is the answer to your question most times it is asked. This will fire a series of flashes that is Canon's feeble attempt at a modeling light from a hotshoe flash. The problem is that it is not really effective as a modeling light and it freaks people out thinking their flash is possessed.
