I've just received my 1st flash.. the 565ex. The first couple days went well, but last night in between photos, the flash would light on it's own. Sort of flickering for about a second or so. Not at full brightness, I think...

Is this a function that I don't understand, or is my flash funky?

Is the flash in your camera hotshoe? If so, are you pressing the DOF preview button on your camera by accident? This is the answer to your question most times it is asked. This will fire a series of flashes that is Canon's feeble attempt at a modeling light from a hotshoe flash. The problem is that it is not really effective as a modeling light and it freaks people out thinking their flash is possessed. :)
