So I have filters on all 3 of my lenses, and at least the ones on the Sigma and the 50mm are like $7-10 each. The one on the 70-210 i bought with the lens so not sure on its quality.
I have hoods on all 3 lenses, including a rubber hood on the 50, and practically always use the hoods, so wondering maybe I should just stash the filters in my camera bag for when I actually need them (at the beach or something.)

I only use filters when needed.

Be careful with that rubber hood on that 50.

Whoa, yeah should be careful. Will check just how much force it takes to unfold the hood.

If you have only cheap filters, they're not helping you. I use B+W MRC F-Pro UVs on my lenses. I haven't seen any degradation from them, and I don't have to worry about FOD from prop-wash or high elevation winds (or other perils).

But thy cost somewhat more than $10 (like $40 for the smallest, up to $100 or so for my 77 mm diameter lenses). I also use Canon's rigid hoods designed for each lens. They serve different primary purposes, but the same secondary one.

Under normal circumstances, hoods should be all you need. For conditions like those you and Jon mentioned, invest in some quality filters (B+W for me as well).

Cheap filters should come off, yes. I also use only B+W MRC filters on my lenses.

Ok thanks guys, will take them off once I find their respective cases or something other to keep them stored in the bag.

Want to turn a $500 lens into a $50 lens? Put a $10 filter in front of it.

Hope you are right Rick :). Would be good to see a bit of an improvment, especially from my Sigma, which had the filter on it from the moment it came out of the box almost two years ago.

+1 - absolutely. Also Jon's recommendation of the B+W filters - you will not see any reduction in image quality.

Only use them at the beach and in the rain. Hoods otherwise.

I have the habit of turning the hood backwards indoors or taking it off completely when there is no sun at all. I use a B+W filter as well. One day after shooting with the hood backwards, I noticed a smudge on the filter. It wasn't scratch, but more like a 4-5mm spot I could never clean no matter how hard I tried. To this day I have no idea how it got there as I'm very mindful of my gear at all times. I'm glad I had a filter on that day.
