Has anyone sent a camera to Canon Canada for repairs? My daughter's XSi recently quit working all of a sudden. Occasionally, She would have had to pull the battery out for a few seconds and put it back in again to make it power on and it would be fine after that. But now it quit totally.

I was filling Canon's online repair form to send the camera to them for repair and it said that it would cost $150 to repair plus shipping costs and taxes, which is paid up front.

Has anyone had thiers repaired by Canon that way and not get charged extra? I figure $150 is a good deal for repairing it since it only has about 12k actuations.

Try replacing the coin cell in it for the clock.

The XSi/450D either doesn't have a "coin cell" or it is not user-accessible.

Hi,
Did they guaranteed that it will be just 150? I'll call them to double check .
Usually after they receive the camera they will tell you how much will really cost : parts + labour.... And you can look at a bigger price. If this will add up to 250 + shipping + shipping insurance .... You will be almost at 400 or more...
At this price you can grab a new t3 -body only

Have you tried cleaning the battery contact points?

Yep. Cleaned them all. Tried different batteries that all work fine in my own XSi. Still no go.

This is the quote I get when I fill out the online form to send to Canon Canada for repair. Nothing about an estimate unless it's from water damage, impact damage, etc. The next forms are just for filling personal information and credit card info for the up-front $149.00 (Plus taxes and shipping).

REPAIR REQUEST (continued)

Please note that this repair quote does not include shipping and taxes if applicable.

Model EOS Rebel XSi
Serial Number<blocked by me>
Service Type Out of Warranty
Estimate repair Cost$149.00 (plus applicable taxes and return shipping cost)

Repair completion is estimated to be 7-10 business days after we receive your product. Actual times may vary due to seasonal volumes, repairs requiring special parts or lengthy testing for unusual / intermittent problems.

The Canon Canada repair facility may either repair your product or exchange it for a new / refurbished product of the same or equivalent model. Defective parts in this product will be repaired or replaced with new or comparable rebuilt parts.

In the unlikely event additional damage is found during the inspection process, such as moisture / liquid, sand, dust, corrosion, battery leakage or impact damage, an estimate will be sent to you for approval.

Canon Canada Inc “Canon” reserves the right to ship such item(s) at Customer’s expense, along with Canon’s invoice for payment for any repaired item(s). Canon shall not be responsible for any repaired or non-repaired item(s) left for more than 30 days.

The $149 is usually their labour charge, and then you pay extra for parts. I sent a T1i to the Mississauga centre and didn't get charged anything for an estimate. It had liquid damage so they did not want to fix it at all. Phone them up. They will give you directions for sending the camera in and then will email you the full repair cost. You will probably find that unless it is something very simple, the repair cost is simply not worth it for an older camera unless it is an upper end camera.

Chris, the XSi isn't that old and checking on Kijiji in my area (London, Sarnia, Kitcherner/Waterloo area) shows used XSi's in the $400-500 range.

As my daughter is currently out of work and sales have been slow for my business, tossing this out and buying a new/used one is out of our reach.

I've had both my cameras into the Mississauga office - the turn-around was 3 or 4 days and the cameras came back spotless. I'd suggest you send it in and see what they say.
You probably will be on the hook for parts but they seem to be priced reasonably (as distinct from their accessories.)

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

Send it in and see what they say. It doesn't cost anything for an estimate, and then you can decide. Here is the address.
Canon Canada,
1400 CourtenayPark Dr. E.
Mississauga, ON
L5T1H1
Phone: 905-795-2111
Send it in by courier. It cost me $20, and they will get it the next day. If you decide not to fix it, ask them to send it back and sell it on Kijiji as a parts camera. They will pay for the shipping back. Good luck, and let us know what the results are.

Sorry, I had to put this on hold due to finances. Just letting my daughter use mine for now.

Will update once finances are better and I can better afford getting it repaired or replaced.

I had called to have the LCD glass cover of my 60D replaced and was told that any repair would be a minimum of $200. The tech agent said that they would charge more than this only if damage was more extensive.

Here is an ad for a used xsi in Bradford. Price is right if it only has the number of actuations listed. Cheaper than fixing yours.
