I just had a chance to play with a Nikon d4 and Zeiss 85 1.4 last night, which was pretty cool and makes me want to empty my wallet into some salesperson's hand. But that isn't the point of this thread :)

The D4 had a very useful system for manual focus; it had 2 arrows pointing in the direction you needed to turn the focus ring to achieve focus, and then a dot in the middle that lit up when optimal focus was achieved sort of like this > o <. My 450D just has a round dot which lights up when I focus on something to tell me focus has been achieved, nothing to tell me how close I am or which way I'm OOF.
I'm wondering of the newer canon bodies have something similar to the nikon, or if it is still just one single indicator light?

Thanks.

How does the d4 know what you are trying to focus on?

The old D90 doesn't have arrows but when you are geting in focus, the confirmation dot starts to blink and when you get focus a solid point. Very usefull IMO..

Kenshap.. Because you have selected one focus point.

I'm guessing you half-press the focus button (with a focus point selected)...the same way a Canon knows whether you're in focus or not...

I seem to remember my old Nikon F100 had this and it was very useful with my old AIS lenses.

I got a LCD viewfinder off ebay for $12.

it's like a giant EVF, much larger and brighter than the OVF, great for manual focus. you can zoom 5x/10x and nails perfect focus everytime!
