Audio help

Im slowing getting into doing more and more video and now wanna learn about audio. Ive been watching alot of videoes. I currently have a 5d mkii and 7d and have a rode video mic. Im going to buy a recorder now and have it down to the zoom h1 or the tascam dr-05. Rather go the cheaper route and once i learn it more move up. I hear both are equal but the tascam has alot more features. So for someone just starting video/audio what would you guys choose?

Just saw they have the dr-07 mkii would this be better too? Seeing them for around 125

Get the DR 40 as it has XLR plugs, phantom power and 4 tracks. It's pretty much a DR100 but without the digital input and inconvenience of a rechargeable power supply. The DR 100 does have separate line and headphone outs which would be good if you want to also record on the camera as otherwise you need an attenuated splitter to record and monitor at the same time......but the DR100 is a lot more where as a DR 40 isn't.

I really dont have the 200 now for the dr-40 im right around the 100$ price range

Well get the best recorder you can for the money. If you can swing the $125 for a DR-07 II, then get that. You will soon max out and learn the H1 and want more options.

DR-40s are going for about $150 right now.

I suggest selling the RODE mic, and purchasing the DR-40 with a nice small diaphragm condenser like these:

So you guys think I should get rid of the mix all together?

Well, first tell me what type of recording you're going to be doing? Are you going to be doing boom work on a film set? Or are you going to do sit-down interviews? Are you going to do run & gun interviews with ambulatory walking and talking?

There are so many different types of recording for film that a quick "Buy this mic" answer is short changing it a bit,

It's as if you asked "What lens should I buy"?
And my answer would be:
"What do you shoot? Landscapes? Portraits? etc."

Oops I thought I wrote it down. m going to do interviews and weddings and other little things. But right now its just to learn I won't book anything until I no what I'm doing. Maybe I'll just save a lil more and get the dr-40

If you do weddings down the road then a couple of wireless mics might be a nice thing to have. Running those into a stand alone recorder like a DR-40 or DR-100 would give you some great sound up moments for both the cerimony and the reception. I suggest at least the Senheiser G2 or G3 mics. They are fairly small, light weight and nice quality for the money. Yeah they cost more than other cheaper options, but they will last you a long time and you'll get better sound.

Another option you could go with is a pair of H1s with lav mics attached and use them as small, personal recorders kind of like a wireless unit. Syncing up the sound later in post is all that's needed.

Then having a external mic like one of the Rode Videomics would be a great thing. That way you could have 3 different sources of sound to mix into your projects.

The problem with sound gear is that to get really good quality sound like what you hear on TV shows or commercials you have to spend a lot of money. Quality costs money. Starting small and working your way up to more gear is probably the best way to go as you are just learning and probably don't have a huge budget for sound gear right now.

Yea thats what id rather do now is just take my time and learn. Start with cheaper stuff and work my way up. I might just get the dr-40 now once i get a few bucks. rather start with that and learn that since its alot more technical then the h1.
