I am about to search for a Helios lens to add to my bag and in reading through all the pages I have seen several listed. I am not sure which to go for. I am looking for sharpness, "soap bubbles" and swirls. I hadn't heard of these lenses before reading this post, please direct me which to choose.

Helios mentioned in this post:
44m-1
44m-2
40-1
40-2

Any advise about Helios is greatly appreciated.

Helios 44 lenses are all 58mm f/2, the second number denotes which cycle it was (if I remember correctly), the lower number the older and the 44-2 had a different optical formula than the later models, most people prefer the 44-2, but it costs a good bit more and is harder to find. To my knowledge all the subsequent 44m lenses had the same formula.

The Helios 40 is an 85mm f/1.5 if I remember correctly and those are still being produced today.

I'm over here in the UK right now and have scrounged up a healthy amount of Helios lenses. I hope to bring home about 12-15 by the time I'm done here. Should be good trade fodder.

Thanks for the info. I am not in a hurry to get anything, but want to know in case I come across something...

@Macheral- let me know what you bring back.

Not quite sure if this qualifies as "best" specified by the thread title... :)
My first serious attempt with a tripod and a Vivitar 75-260mm manual focus lens @ f/16.

Vivitar 70-210/3.5 series 1 Macro on Canon 30D

This is the 1st gen/version, with the 22xxxx serial number making it the Kino/Kiron lens that many seek out...it's a tank...
The only negative/concern I have is the very long rotational throw makes focusing more gradual, with less "pop," especially when stopped down as one must do on Canon...
It does not have the quick "in and out of focus" I experience with Nikkors...especially the later AIS Nikkors...but...
The color and contrast is excellent...next up will be some macro shooting...

My dad still has my old Zenit 11 at his house, might be time to dig it out and take a look at the Helios attached to it the next time I visit :)

So it's you that's depleting our stock of Helios lenses! I was wondering where they had all gone.

Ha! Northern Ireland so I think your stock is safe for now.

Just picked up this beauty from an estate sale. It's a Piesker Berlin 250mm f/4.5 M42 mount. From what I hear, they are extremely rare. Image quality is excellent. If anyone has any additional information on this lens, please let me know!
