Hi,

i got one 5d2, one 5d3. i love the canon radio sys.

i got two 600ex-rt and a ST-E3 and tried them on last wedding and its great. however, as a wedding photographer, who run around with at least 2 camera with me at all times. I only have 1 ST-E3 on my 5d3. say i got the 35L on my 5d3 with the ST-E3 and i am happy firing away. then i want to switch quick to my 5d2 with 70-200 but i cant trigger the 600ex-rt...

hence, im thinking of either getting another ST-E3 to fit into the 5d2. what do you think?
do you have the same experiences? what will/have you do?

thank you.

Do you need to shoot that quick when using OCF?

I do when I'm shooting the reception. I have two cameras on me. But I use pocket wizards. I tried the 600 ex-rt flashes and transmitter but I prefer the simplicity of my manual flashes and PW's.

i am thinking of taking it out of the 5D3 and put the ST-E3 on the 5D2 next time. maybe i just have to pause the flow for a free seconds.

Using two cameras is a personal choice. If you want to use both cameras with the OCF, then you have to have them setup that way. Personally, if I shot that way, I'd use 600EX-RTs on the cameras for fill. But if you prefer the STE3 then yes get another one. Maybe consider getting another 600EX-RT and turn the flash off when its on camera.

This is how I would do it too.

This is what I do - I have ST-E3's but during the reception I use 600EX's on camera for fill and more importantly for the AF assist.

I've been using just 1 camera at receptions. I do have 2 600-EX-RT flashes so I do have the second one ready to go.

Considering how much the ST-E3 costs and due to the lack of the AF assist beam, I'd just get another 600-EX-RT.

Thats the conclusion i have come to as well. Too easy to put a Plus1 on a camera and fire away. I you dont already have $$ invested in a cybersynch system or a PW system then maybe i could see it. But these 600s are not any more powerful than the 580-s. I have both sets of wizards,,plus11 and mini/flex systems...they work flawlessly for me with zero issues. They fire strobes or speed lights. Honestly, since i have switched over and we are using Beauty dish's and strobes for outside work, strobes and parabolic for formals, About the only time we use a speed light is at a reception, processional, and a dressing room. I get better light with strobes,,especially outside... speed lights cant cut it at 2;00PM in the afternoon when we are out messing around with bridal parties. Speed lights don't put out enough light for my needs with parabolic s and formals. I want to soot my formals at F/8 so speed lights wont get me there inside either.

pretty ticked at Canons take it or leave it attitude by discontinuing the 580's. So i have been a very loyal canon user but when it come to the time that i have to replace these 580's i will probably have to go aftermarket. I dont need a 600.oo speed light for what i do.

Yeah, I don't look at the 600-EX-RT as a replacement for my strobes. Not even close. But it's great when you need something fast and if it fits the power requirements. I love the built-in radio capabilities. There's just no reason for me to go back to the 580EXII. I need to get a third 600-EX-RT.

If u r usin the 5d3 or 1dx, the 600 will have more auto focus assist beams than 580ii.

Yep, I have my ste3rt on one camera, a 600exrt on my second body and my other three 600exrt off camera on stands, works great. Love the system, so easy and fast to setup, and cant wait to get the 5DIII so I can use the GR mode and use ettl on master and manual off camera.

there's always the 430EX II line that's still available...

I've moved on to strobes as well... I don't use a flash all that much anymore, but my 2nd shooter still does, and that's the main reason why i still have those 5...
next year, 3 of those will be replaced by 2 more bees!

I use 2 cameras, my 5dmk3 has a 600ex on it, and my 5dmk2 has the st-e3, I use them with 2 off camera 600ex-rt's, I can still have on camera fill flash on my 5d3 with 24-70, ad complete off camera flash with the 5d2 with either 85l or 70-200. Works really well for me
