I'm looking to spend <$100 on this single light setup.

I'm thinking that if I can then a shoot-through and reflector umbrella would be good.

I'm going to be using a YN-468II with YN-622 as the strobe setup.

EDIT: Read Post #31. It's an update. Different request.

I like these stands on the budget end. They're nothing out of the ordinary but for a generic type stand the quality is better than I expected. There's a couple other choices there too

A good umbrella with removable cover. You can do better than the bowens if you want to spend for it but I use one of these and am happy with it for the price.

And for umbrella holder, I would just go for the manfrotto from the start. I've had too many issues with the cheaper ones, it just ruins the whole setup

32" umbrellas are kinda small and I like them for headshots, but you may want to go up to 43" or a 50 something just for more versatility. The "convertible" ones give you shoot through and bounce. Shouldn't cost much, Cowboy Studio/ePhoto brands are fine.

What size should I be looking at if I'm going to be using it for the full length of a person? I don't mind doing headshots with smaller umbrellas, but some of the work I'm looking at doing involves dancers. Think tango (external link) closeness? (Image is somewhat representative of the largest scale I'll be getting at) What should I be using for that size of lighting? I'm hoping that my YN-468 can give enough power to light that. (1/100th, F/4, ISO 400? Should be enough? I've seen this thing light much larger spaces, but that was from bounce off a 12ft ceiling.) The further I have the light away the less fall off there will be too... and more even distribution of light, but... Eh?

bump

EDIT: The location I am going to be doing a shoot at in about a month has black ceilings... And nothing else to really bounce off of. They're high ceilings too. Anyway, I tried it. Bounce won't work. Even at full power my flash can't reach that well enough.

I would assume bigger is better for that type of scenario. I can't say if your flash will be powerful enough, but here is a cheap 60" umbrella that will work as bounce and shoot through.

Here is one of the best bangs for you buck, I think:
http://www.adorama.com/LTU60BC.html (external link)

Beautiful, big and 35 bucks. This will do full length on 3 or 4 people, easily. You may want the plastic diffuser on the flash just to help spread the light in the umbrella. Quality is there, I bought a couple of brolly's cheap off ebay and now regret it, they have started to fall apart and have had little use, so make sure you get something cheap, but sturdy.

This umbrella wont work well in low ceilings, but may be perfect where you are going to shoot, and they ship fast so you'll have some play time.

LOL, great minds, posted the same time as toolman21 above.

and I want to add, get a stand that is sturdy - these are a bit heavy, and a small footprint stand might have issues, I've used them on this stand and been fine:

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

For that price of a stand I may as well get a manfrotto... :/

I'll look into that Adorama 60" umbrella. I'm wondering if the white backing is not going to reflect enough light well enough for a small flash like I have? Any ideas?

Westcott makes a 7ft silver umbella, as does Paul Buff, the alien bees people. Whether you can fully fill it with a speedlight is questionable, but its an option. A single speedlite in a black room full length for dancers is probably not going to yield the results you want, but its a start.

Yeah, I'm skeptical of the results as well. I think 7ft is going to be too large for this. But, I don't know anything about umbrellas.

Keep in mind that 7ft is measured across the back arc of the umbrella.

Really? I thought they measured umbrellas in diameter. Hmph. How large would the umbrella actually be then...? Regardless, seems overkill?

Its still big. I dont have one handy to measure. The point is with an umbrella the size doesnt make any less efficient, if the umbrella only fills out to say 60 inches, its not like those extra inches harm you. But your budget is going to make it hard to find any solution for stand, bracket, and umbrella of any real size.

I have a 60" umbrella and it is big! Its not until you open it up that you realize just how big it is. Sure it would be big enough, it would essentially be a light bomb, but for the scenario you have in mind, I wouldn't want to use only 1 speedlight.
I have a triple flash bracket that I use with mine and use 3 YN 460ii's in it. It REALLY speeds up recycle times, and total output possible if needed. I think that's where you should look first, adding some speedlights of jumping up to a monolight.

A Westcott Apollo or Orb type of softbox will give you more directional control of the light and won't waste as much light as a shoot thru umbrella would.
