What, why would they leave this feature out? It's not hard to implement is just a software feature. The rebels do it by flipping the mirror down quickly during live view.

it's not a software feature. t4i has a hybrid sensor includes two sets of AF sensors: both contrast and phase-detection AF array on the actual imaging sensor itself.

I have to humbly disagree here, the 1DX has some pretty spectacular RAWs from what I've seen, and the 5DIII is no slouch in the IQ department...I think Canon might have been better off to stick the 1DX sensor in the 5DIII personally, but thats just me...

The D800 is an amazing machine, Not going to lie, and yes, nothing in Canon's lineup can quite match it in terms of quality, but that doesnt make the 5DIII bad...

As for the no AF at f/8 with TCs, thats more laws of physics than Canon "Crippling" the camera to my knowledge, To cram 63 AF points and make as many of them crosstype as Canon did meant that they were only going to work with wider aperture lenses... What Canon SHOULD however have is a camera that IS tweaked for folks who use TCs, Which for all we know is in development...

They could have made it AF at f8 with fewer of those points. Older 1 series only AF at f8 with center point.

Looking at the 6D specs, I too am underwhelmed. The official Canon press release ledes with how small the body is. Really? It's essentially a full-frame Rebel. Wireless is useful for studio photographers, sure, but most of the other new features amount to whistles and bells, as others have pointed out. My first thought was that it might make a good backup body, but then I saw the price. Wow. I suspect the 6D won't top any bestseller lists any time soon.

This body really strikes me as a stopgap product release. Canon didn't have the 7D II or 70D or any other significant release ready for the upcoming holiday shopping season, so put this together using off-the-shelf tech and parts from other cameras. Nothing about the 6D leads me to believe Canon intends for it to remain a permanent line, in this form at any rate. I'm not hating on Canon for this camera, but it is underwhelming.

I'm very pleased that Canon had the sense to include AF microadjustment. Any serious professional camera needs to have this feature.

Really?

Any idea as to how fast the WiFi will be? It is great to have it built in but I assume it will probably be couple of yrs old technology (speed wise).

Am I the only one who thinks this is a fantastic idea for a camera? As a travelling musician, the small size is a plus, the built in GPS is a major plus, the built in WFT is a major plus (can't wait for that app-of only i could afford the camera in the first place) and the loss of 2 megapixels from the 5D2 is kind of neglable considering most of my stuff is for the web....

I find the autofocus on the 5D2 slightly limiting but make it work, like an awful lot of photogs do,

does nobody else think this will be an incredibly useful camera?

They say it does not support the EF-S lenses

"Canon EF lenses (except EF-S and EF-M lenses)"

what does that mean??

I like it - especially for the price-point. The only gripe I have is lack of a built-in flash, but it won't stop me buying one.

Good job Canon.

No FF camera supports EF-S lenses. EF-S lenses are designed for crop sensors (XXXD, XXD, etc.)

bannedPermanent ban

People that calls this camera 'consumer FF' have missed the point imho.

Canon isn't releasing this camera to the masses, nor trying to make ff affordable.

They are only releasing this in response to the direct competition, namely D600.

Canon is getting a lot of pressure from Nikon obviously, and with that in mind, when you compare this to D600, it's pretty one sided and this camera falls short.

Rubbish. Canon would have had to be developing this camera many months ago.

Both brands have identified a category: entry level FF. And both now have a product in the category, each with a differentiated feature set attractive to a slightly different customer segment.

Both will sell like hot-cakes.

How so? Seems competitive to me, slightly lower FPS but shoots higher ISO. Comparable AF abilities considering the -3 EV low light verses the D600's -1 EV. And the D600's 9 cross type AF points, are all in the centre so that's not really much more useful than the single centre AF cross type point for spot autofocus and object tracking.

These cameras take months or years to develop, Canon and Nikon can only know what the other is doing through corporate espionage, at the very best they would have been aware of Nikon's roadmap, not the precise details of the D600. The cameras were released way too close together for this to have been a response to Nikon. Canon's just fulling a hole in their line up, two companies different takes on what the budget full frame should be.

I agree, without arguing the merits of the camera one way or another, to claim anything other than that both companies have been simultaneously working on their "entry level" full frame models for many months is crazy.

Sure, Canon just saw Nikon's D600 announcement last week and threw this together over the weekend .
