I've been shooting for a couple years now, Pentax mostly, I love my K5, K20D and my k-x, and get great results with them, but those are all APS-C bodies. I have been thinking about going full frame for my studio work for a while now, and I want to know opinions on whether the simple, old, 5D classic would fit my needs.

I want to invest in full frame for primarily studio portrait work, so I plan on investing in a 5D (since you can get a used body for as low as <$700 many places these days. I want to save money on the full frame body (as opposed to blowing it all on a newer model with features I will likely not use (although there is no denying the better sensor would be nice) Instead, I was going to use the bulk of my money on the spectacular Canon 85mm f1.2L. I might invest in a 35mm prime or maybe a 24-70mm f2.8 just for walkaround/street stuff later on.

I do not take video at all, I am strictly a still photo purist, and like I said I want it primarily for controlled, studio work so I would be using iso 50-400 mostly, rarely going above that and pretty much never going above 1600 for anything. With all that said, do you think for my needs I could get away with a 5D classic and the fantastic L glass, as opposed to ponying up for a mk 2 and getting cheaper glass.

The 5D is still a more than capable camera. I'd say go with 5D Classic and invest in lens. Since you're in a controlled environment such as a studio, I'd say you're good to go. It resolution is still good for large prints.

I came from pentax as well. Loved pentax, loved the metal build of the primes. But now I think my 5d2 is the bees-knees, in fact I've stopped lusting after 35mm dslrs, it does the job well enough for me that I don't feel the need to upgrade.

Agree with the general consensus though... save money on the body, buy the best glass you can. I don't own a 5Dc (looking to get one as a backup though), but i have used them and they are a great camera as long as you don't get crazy on the ISO (which in a studio you won't).

Great images Tawcan! Thanks so much for the info. I also checked out the 5Dc thread here and was pretty impressed by many of the shots. Can anyone comment on the viewfinder of the 5D? I often like to manual focus to fine-tune, especially when using primes, do you find the viewfinder bright enough for manual focus in reasonable light?

You can get an ee-s focusing screen which helps a lot when focusing manual with fast primes.
