Random thought from skimming thread titles today about how there are lines and phrases you can use in some fields that you really simply can't use in general conversation in other places without getting really funny looks/beat up.

The example that really made me think of this issue was a thread title about how someone couldn't get their slave to work.

If you're really into photography you may have to think about how such a line could be a little awkward for a bit. But it could be.

So, any other thoughts on a perfectly valid and reasonable phrase or line that you could get away with in photography, where everyone would know what you're talking about, but make yourself sound like a horrible/stupid person in any other company?

Heh, I have this kind of situation all the time, especially since I shoot a lot of gigs. I often have to stop myself from saying "I'm shooting a band tonight", instead opting for the more clumsy-sounding "I'm photographing a band tonight" to avoid any odd looks.

Haha I use "shoot" all the time. I once said "I shot a beautiful girl yesterday," and somebody was actually confused at what I was talking about.

once i was speaking to another photographer in the presence of a non-photographer (my wife before we got married) and I told him that he should change his f-stop....
my wife then turned to me and told me that it was impolite to curse, even if didn't say the full word...
i then explained the connection....
so in this case - I didn't "get away" with it...

I asked a colleague to come to my office and see the tiger I shot over the weekend. She was mortified thinking I had been on safari vs. to the zoo.

It's the people with the .30-06 cameras that the zoos object to.

Not a line I've said or heard, but read the title of the latest thread on the Lenses section of the forum, and laughed:

"Has my 18-55 got soft?"
