Both cameras are priced the same in the US, $2099.

A comparison of the important specs, taken from Canon/Nikon's web sites (Canon Rumors is wrong about the 6D having a 1/8000 sec max shutter speed, it is actually 1/4000 sec with 1/180 sec max flash sync).

I'm not going to voice any of my own opinions about this camera, though I will say I moved to a D700 for a reason. I just want to put all of the correct specs in one place so that objective comparison is simple. From comparing the specs, there is a pretty significant difference.

D600:

-24 MP Sony Sensor
-39 Point AF with 9 cross points (in a 3x3 grid in the center)
-Built in flash with wireless flash commander
-5.5 FPS
-1/4000 sec max shutter speed, 1/200 sec max flash sync
-Dual SD card slots
-100% viewfinder coverage, compatibility with DX lenses
-Optional wifi/GPS

6D:
-20MP sensor
-11 Point AF with 1 cross point (the center one)
-No built in flash
-4.5 FPS
-1/4000 sec max shutter speec, 1/180 sec max flash sync
-Single SD card slot
-97% viewfinder coverage, not compatible with EF-S lenses
-Built in Wifi/GPS

It looks to me like Canon needs to either a) drop the price, or b) recall and redesign the camera to have specs similar to those of the Nikon.

Is it me or does that spec sheet reads a bit too much like a 5d2?

x2. Not at all competing with Nikon. This is nothing special at all.

I was a big defender of the 6D... and really not happy with this release. Canon had the D600 in it's sights and it was released BEFORE the 6D. This camera announcement should have been pulled for today and upgraded the 6D and release the information in six months. The rumors were 5D sensor in a 7D(basically). Take the 7D AF and rugged build/body. Come in around 2200 dollars.

What we got is a Rebel/60D with a FF sensor. it has a new AF system. A new sensor. A Touch screen. The AF system only has a single cross type focus point in the center. The controls are the 60D with all the buttons on the 'wrong' side(for most Canon users). The list goes on...

Guess a new or used 5D MKII is in the cards like I was planning.

As a previous 50D owner the 60d was not a lateral move but went backwards since it killed the MA option.

I can see a loyal or "stuck"(too many lenses to change systems) canon user to buy the 6d for and incremental step in improvements.

Nikon win!!! canon loose as usual.

Actually it's worse... especially the pathetic 1/4000s shutter speed
which means I will have to buy a bunch of ND filters for my fast lenses to shoot in broad day light. I was hoping they would use a 9point all cross AF  they are forcing many of the current 5DII users to upgrade to the much more expensive mkIII

It's interesting to see that people think its easy to whip out a camera. Yes, D600 was announced and released first but while the 6D was in its R&D phase, Canon nor did anyone else for that matter besides Nikon know what their specs would have been.

Canon's 6D is based on what they felt is suitable as an entry level full frame. Each company has their own view and take on what the product would be. For all we know, Canon could have been more conservative to see what the market would be like.

You also have to factor in other products within the companies product line as well as pricing of parts and manufacturing. Releasing a product with better specs that is near say the 5D3 would just kill its own product.

From a consumer stand point, its frustrating. But from a manufacturers view, there is probably a reason. I unloaded my Nikon gear to jump to Canon. I heard about the entry level 6D rumor and thought to myself that I would wait it out since the 5D3 was a bit out of my price range considering I'm in the process of closing on a house. So every penny counts. Now that I see the specs, I may pass on the 6D and convince the wife to let me purchase the 5D3.

When the main rival drops a camera before you(and their own users are complaining about the specs) you should consider doing something. When the general thought is you have been failing for a few years and there are a good amount of people switching it might be time to make something happen.

They missed the boat. They went with a strategy of just going up against the rival directly on this one model. Instead of offering something great.

:(

OMG

1/4000s and 1 cross-point? And I doubt it's really a 'new' sensor, same ol' technology but just with a different MP count. Why would anyone buy this over a 5DII? So they can have a FF with wi-fi and a touchscreen?

This is not looking good for the future IMO.

I guess used 5DII prices may actually go up a little now!
