Wow. I hope this doesn't screw up the future of Nik's plugins.

Care to elaborate, pbelarge? I'm feeling a bit apprehensive myself. Invariably, in the case of buyouts like this, things do tend to change, and not always for the better.

I guess I'm nervous as I've spent a lot of money on Nik plugins and upgrades over the last year or so, and would hate to see any products change or fall by the wayside.

I want to be positive about this, but this buyout doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling..
I guess we'll find out more in the future, like if the current developers are going to continue working on future enhancements. I personally hope they stay and use the infusion of cash to make the software that much better.

Well Nik it was fun while it lasted. Unless you like doing your photo editing on your phone or tablet this is going to suck. Google will gut it use the bits it wants for mobile and let the rest fall by the wayside.

I am hoping they will provide free version of it, as well as pro version at lower cost. Google wants to give users ways to create photo like "instagram" which was bought out by facebook.

Oh, I hope this is a positive thing, not negative.

Wow, this could be very interesting. I love all of the Nik plug-ins I've tried (Color Efex and Silver Efex), but I bet Snapseed had more to do with this purchase than any of those. Hope this leads to even better products in the future. None of my non-photog friends had ever heard of Nik before Snapseed.

Funny thing is I find myself using filters and presets less and less over time, but there's no denying their convenience especially for mobile devices.

The VP of Engineering at Google announced this on Google+ (external link) this morning. Rumors have it that the main reason for the purchase was for Google to get Snapseed in an effort to compete with Facebook + Instagram. I'll be curious to see the future of the Nik plugins.

Bad News....Google bought Nik Software

They wanted the Nik Snapseed app to jumpstart their failing Google+ social network and compete with instagram. I am thinking this will be very bad for future updates of their great photoshop plugins. Most likely they will dump the plugin effort in order to focus on phone apps with "cute" one click filter effects. :o

Not necessarily. If they decide not to continue the plugin development I bet they could sell it off to Adobe or something relatively easily.

I don't understand all the negativity. NIK will be fine.

I doubt they would sell the plugins because it's pretty similar to snapseed with the control points and stuff. The control point tech is a differentiator in terms of photo editing apps, so there is no way they would sell that. Given the market size for their PS plugins, I doubt they would bother to unload the PS side anyway. It's probably not worth the time to them.
