The majority don't have issues but many still do.

Are we looking at the same pages? Because Adorama has 10 reviews, 5 and 4 star only, B&H has 99 reviews, none lower than 3 star, and Amazon has 88 reviews with only 8 lower than 3 stars. I wouldn't really call that "many"...

I only really looked at amazon site reviews. Out of 89 reviews 13 are 3 star or less. But on top of that when you read the low reviews many say "13 people found this useful" etc. To me 14% of reviews having issues is relatively high, but maybe that's just me.

Anyway my post wasnt supposed to come across as a troll post, I'm actually going to buy this lens today as I have talked myself back into it

You really have to look at more than one source though :) and that 14% becomes much smaller once you look at the bigger picture.

I know it wasn't intended as a troll post. I was just trying to put your mind at ease!

I was close on ordering this lens after looking through the lens sample thread and now I've just spent ages reading through the tail end of this thread and I'm not so sure again! I had a siggy 85 previously and ended up selling due to focus issues. I'm now not sure I want to take the risk again with the S35 as people seem to be having issues with and without the dock.

Wish I hadn't sold my 35L a few months back now

You know that Adorama offers pre-ship testing?

Email me for details: Helen@adorama.com (external link)

Love this lens. Mine required MA of +6, but then again so does all of my L-lenses. Perhaps something with my body (5d II). AF works extremely reliable, and couldn't be happier. Haven't tried that much focusing in complete darkness but my first impressions it holds it's own to 50L, when it comes to autofocusing. This is the best 35mm I ever tried, along with Distagon 35/1.4. Haven't noticed any problems so far. Sharpest lens I ever owned (along with the Zeiss 21). Also it pushed me over the edge to sell my 50L.

Now I am only hoping Sigma can repeat this success with the coming 135mm f/1.8 OS :) :)

I generally don't trust reviews on sites that dangle giveaway offers 2 or 3 days after your items arrive. A lot of the reviews are written by starry-eyed new owners who haven't had time to discover the limits of their gear. It's a clever strategy on the retailers' part, but doesn't result in reliable statistics.

The forum's responses have been overwhelmingly positive, even allowing for the "starry-eyed new owner" effect, and the images posted by users of the 35 are pretty convincing. Of course, the images posted by users of the 35L also are pretty convincing . . .

Starry eyed reviewers aside, many people will come back and update their reviews if the product shows issues. People over analyze this lens' focusing. The reviews are justified. Heck I even had to return my first copy (before the USB dock was released), but buy from a reputable retailer and returning is completely hassle free. Amazon, I was out $0 and only a week of time. The lens is worth any hassle it might take to get a good copy.

The images posted by the 35L users are convincing because they are great photographers, just as many here with the Sigma are. There is unquestionable difference in image quality though between the two lenses, particularly sharpness if that is your cup of tea.

Does +20 MA seem excessive straight out the box? +20 is almost giving me correct focus but not quite but that's it maxed out. Only got the lens today so not sure if I should return for another or buy the dock and try and sort that way

I think +20 is a bit extreme, if it was me, I'd exchange for another.

OK sorry folks but after I calmed down and set up the focus test better - i.e good light, tripod, remote shutter, camera level, target square to sensor etc - my lens seems to function well at +7 ! :o

Pic below is at MFD. Also tested at 50x focal length with similar results

Panic over and lesson learned. Now that I know its nailing the focus under test conditions I can give the lens a proper workout tomorrow with some real subjects.
