Can someone explain the big deal about this lens?

How is this so much better then the Sigma 30mm F1.4 which is half the price?
The only thing I see is that its for FF vs the 30mm is crop.. but is that it?

Can you use crop lenses on FF?

I also don't get the hype. I would much rather have the new Canon 35. Canon QC and 4 stop IS and much smaller size. I will be able to hand hold 0.5s shots with that guy. 1 stop and no IS for same price, no thanks.

On 7d, might as well get 30mm f1.4.

On FF, f1.4 is quite nice.

But new 35 has IS. Had a Sigma 30, never really liked it. I find IS on short focal lengths incredibly useful. Also I will be getting 5D III eventually.

I currently have a 35L that will likely be sold after I get this lens.

I went through all of the Canon 50mm lenses (except the Macro) and then got the Sigma 50. I prefer the Sigma's colors and contrast.

I went from the Canon 85mm f/1.8 to the 85LII, then got the Sigma 85. I prefer the Sigma.

When comparing the Sigma 50 & 85's colors and contrast to the 35L, I prefer the sigmas. So, if the Sigma 35 is as solid of a performer as the 50 and 85, I'll likely sell the 35L and keep the Sigma.

MSRP of £799 (~$1280) in the UK. No word on the release date yet.

Thanks for that. I'm happy with the price although it still annoys me how we have to pay so much more for everything over here..

Just have to wait and see how the lens compares to the 35L now..

More groups and elements, 9 blade over 8 diaphragm blades. A should be sharper wide open than the 30, better colors, we will see I like my 30mm, but I love my 85mm, is this lens is like my 85mm I will be jumping on it as fast as I can.

It's one of three lenses that are the first to come from Sigma's new lines. QC is supposed to be their focus now. Every lens is subject to Sigma's improved testing capability.

The build quality looks to be on a par with Canon's L but at around 60% of the price. IQ remains to be seen, but if Sigma expect their newest designs to be taken seriously, it must be close to, if not better than what's already available.

There are plenty around who'd rather have the 1 stop wider over the 4 stop IS.

Also what's this lens made of? Is it aluminum or plastic? Can't really tell from pictures.

Would you get the new Canon 35 f/2 over its 35L?

If not, then why not? That should be the reason similar as to why this new Sigma is so looked forward to.

To each their own.

Yes I would get the f/2 over the L. IS and the small size is more important than one extra stop.
