But new 35 has IS. Had a Sigma 30, never really liked it. I find IS on short focal lengths incredibly useful. Also I will be getting 5D III eventually.

Can you tell which one is 30mm f1.4 and which one 35L.:D

Every one has different needs. To me faster aperture over IS unless supterteles where IS is really needed.

Yes I would get the f/2 over the L. IS and the small size is more important than one extra stop.

Why not switch to micro 4/3? You could get the excellent new 17mm F2 (it's 35mm equivalent due to 2X crop factor) and if you get an Olympus body, OS is built in. MUCH smaller and lighter.

Most people in this thread, however, like to shoot at wide apertures with a big sensor, for that beautiful shallow DOF look.

I don't see what the purpose of this is. Controlled tests under controlled conditions. I guarantee 100% crops will show a difference, not web sized shots. When AF worked on the 30, the pictures were great. But AF was so hit and miss it was ridiculous.

Well that was fun for a little while. I just wanted to randomly **** about a product I didn't have a lot of interest in, just like 90% of the forum is currently doing about the 24-70 f/4.

But in reality the Sigma looks great. I am still wondering though, is the barrel made of aluminum? That's one thing I am not happy with my 17-50, is the finish. I would really like this to be aluminum, but it appears slightly plastic-ish. If the price drops to $700, I will seriously consider getting it.

From what information I can glean, it's an all-metal construction.

I really really want this lens but just before the holidays its tough to justify spending 900 bucks. I'll wait and see some sample shots and then bite. Hope my 30 1.4 doesn't devalue then. I'd imagine it wouldn't due to it being for crop only and the huge price differential puts it in two different markets.

Anyone know if it's weathersealed, they keep talking about higher built quality but I can't seem to find about this important aspect!

Also, anyone else noticed their new QC system uses an APS-C sensor to test quality of a FF lens! Hope they move that sensor around to account for the full image circle!

Here are some MTF charts (external link) of the Sigma vs. the Canon 35mm lenses, if anyone is interested.
For reference, the Sigma chart shows wide open performance only. Canon charts show both wide open performance (black lines) and performance @f/8 (blue lines).

Sigma's looking quite competitive.

I don't know for sure but I am near postive it won't be weather sealed.

Yeah, those charts mean absolutely nothing to me either... Hopefully the new Siggy will be a stellar performer. It sure looks promising.
