Sigma 35 1.4 - Wide open - no sharpening in ACR or PS, all ACR sliders left to default position of 0. I did straighten and front image crop the image so a slide reduction in sharpness. Auto WB. Compared to the Canon, definitely sharper and I believe a better color rendition. The Canon 35L seems to push towards magenta, while the Sigma leans towards yellow/green....

PS, I never let him watch TV that close obviously. Just wanted to add some higher contrast to the scene.

Got the lens last week and have been playing with it. The thin DoF at 1.4 takes some getting used to. On my 5D3, every one of my lenses needs some slight AMFA, this one needed a setting of 4 according to FOCAL.

I love the build and feel of the lens - much as I love the build and feel of the Sigma 50. I am also happy to report that I am getting rather consistent results with the new 35. Though at 1.4, a significant amount of attention must be paid to composition.

As opposed to posting images taken with the lens, I thought there may be some interest in showing the results of the Aperture/Focus Sharpness test. The images that I have taken seem in line with the results, at 4.5 my copy is quite sharp. Unfortunately, I was only able to run the test under fluorescent lights positioned directly above the target. I hope to be able to run them outside under better lighting conditions in the next week or so. I suspect that the shape of the curve would stay the same, but I may be able to eke out some better numbers or a slightly flatter curve.

The sigma definitely onions worse than the 35L. Just did some shots of my wife in front of some christmas lights. Really noticeable. On the Sigma they looked like footballs... on the 35L they were much rounder, closer to a perfect circle. This may be a deal breaker for me.

I can see onions in both but you're right about it being more obvious, can you post the originals of both 35L and the S35?

The bokeh highlights do tend to be lemon shaped anywhere but in or near the center of the frame.

Also. What are those lines inside the bokeh of the sigma. And yes it is noticeable in the full image.

These lenses usually only go cats-eyes (the lemon bokeh) around the edges of the frame. Also the Canon image is slightly higher exposure which will hide it's onions more. The Canon would still onion less but the difference would be less, and you might not like those centre onion cores on the Canon ;)

Here's one I put up in the other, sample images, thread. The onion patterning is so faint that even at 100% I don't mind it at all, but I know for some folks it is very...what, disturbing? Unpleasant? These oof highlights are just slightly oblong, but I have other samples that are much worse. It's too bad, but it will probably effect less than 1% of the pictures I take, so I don't mind too much.

Yes but still quite noticeable when zoomed out. I just don't find it acceptable, especially in your example. But I'm sensitive to those types of things...
