Thanks. So it matches up with what we've been saying: the Sigma is a little sharper in the middle and a lot sharper in the corners (although neither lens is really sharp there) wide open, with less CA. By f/2 the differences are pretty negligible.

eeee look at that CA, that's what I saw in my shots too on my 35L and made me a bit angry trying to fix against a purple scarf. LOL

In my tests last night the sharpness even at 1.4 is NOT that great in real world shots. The bokeh is more of a deal breaker for me.

so you basically got this lens to compare against the 35L... it's a cheaper lens that's a little bit sharper... I wouldnt get rid of the 35L if I had one because they're so closely matched, and I think you've already come to that conclusion. But for people starting off fresh, this looks like the goto lens.

It makes me believe with all these new 2nd generation type lenses, regardless of manufacturer, if they maximize sharpness there are tradeoffs with bokeh and other aspects (like distortion as well). Look at the 24-70 II for example... Supposedly the bokeh is not as good as V.1 but is a hell of a lot sharper. I heard the same for the 70-200 II as well, and now the Sigma 35. Maximizing sharpness generally takes away in other areas. Now if those traits don't bother you then there is no problem!

I really do love how the 35L renders though... If I get some money that is the next lens I will be buying back (if I don't go with the Sigma). I don't mind the hair of softness wide open, the two I tried were more than acceptable for my standards with sharpness of a f/1.4...

The color rendition and bokeh of the 35L is simple stunning. It kind of makes it a bit more desirable over sharpness of the Sigma at this point. But time will tell after more reviews come in after the hype has died down.

well onions are only part of the story, and pretty much a pixel peepers nightmare.

but the same pixel peeper should have issues with octagon bokeh as well, which is not as easy to fix as onion bokeh:

@f2, sigma is clearly better

And if you look at the 35L's bokeh in that test, it has onion bokeh too. And not any less than the Siggy

Tony have you ever noticed any onions in the 35L? I'm gonna go pixel peep my 35L shots tonight as well to see how bad I could see the onions - I know I totally didn't look for them but couldn't tell they were there.
