It makes me believe with all these new 2nd generation type lenses, regardless of manufacturer, if they maximize sharpness there are tradeoffs with bokeh and other aspects (like distortion as well). Look at the 24-70 II for example... Supposedly the bokeh is not as good as V.1 but is a hell of a lot sharper. I heard the same for the 70-200 II as well, and now the Sigma 35. Maximizing sharpness generally takes away in other areas. Now if those traits don't bother you then there is no problem!
I really do love how the 35L renders though... If I get some money that is the next lens I will be buying back (if I don't go with the Sigma). I don't mind the hair of softness wide open, the two I tried were more than acceptable for my standards with sharpness of a f/1.4...
The color rendition and bokeh of the 35L is simple stunning. It kind of makes it a bit more desirable over sharpness of the Sigma at this point. But time will tell after more reviews come in after the hype has died down.
