So people were expencting 5dIII specs for only $2k?

Exactly!

I guess I would have expected a feature enhanced 7D before a tooled down FF, but if Canon has done the right amount of market research - they are seeing a market for this type of camera between the 7D and 5DIII.

As for me, I'll keep my old 40D and the 5DM2 and remain very happy.

Now thats funny

Yeah trapped by investment in lovely L lenses.
Just seriously miffed this was the best they could do.
Looks like i'll have to save for a 5DIII ;)

then it looks like canon did their job right then by differentiating their line. if they were gonna fit the 5d3 AF, 100% vierfinder, all the video capabilities, all mag body, faster FPS and so on for a cheaper price then they just killed off their 5d3. seems like you want EVERYTHING in the camera for CHEAP. dont we all wish it worked that way

different people have different needs. apparently you need a camera like the 5d3 to fit your needs. by making the 6d not as worthy they are making you buy the more expensive one. seems like the did it right to me.

now in comparison to the d600 yeah they didnt do too well. but canon shooters will shoot canon and nikon will shoot nikon... for now.

I wonder if you would be so keen at $2,850! [£1800 x 1.58]
Well that's what we pay in the UK; so I think that gives us the right to be a little more demanding regarding basics like the number and type of AF points, basic weather proofing, and the build quality [SIZE & weight].
Obviously don't expect the same features as 5DIII, more in line with a full frame 7D [with possibly less manual control and less fps - yeah I'll be fair to Canon on this, if you want it, pay for it - its called the 5DIII]

This is a good point.
Personally it seems that everything gets thinner and lighter - and for me fundamentally things don't last as long. My experience is weight = strength = quality.
So I will pay the weight penalty.

But I also realise, the older population is growing, has much more disposable income and dont want the extra weight. Similarly as more and more women have better paid jobs [lets face it at least in the UK the girls outperform the boys in school... so it's only a matter of time before they dominate the workplace:lol:!] they may prefer the lighter weight too.

I'd hate to have to make that decision as a camera maker - I'd just go by poll results, what do the majority want or make a Lightweight version to appeal to that sector.

Fair enough if that's your opinion on weight vs. strength but it is only your opinion.
You've listed it in the negative column as if it's a fact but I'd be surprised if the majority of amateur photographers (that's the target market) agree with you.
I've had my 550d for two years and it's showing no signs of weakness. On the whole I treat it very carefully but I have bashed it a couple of times and it's survived the trauma.

It seems very rigid to me. Under normal use I can't see how anyone could break it?
I'm neither old nor female but I do appreciate the fact that I can carry the camera around New York for a day without having to stop and put it down every couple of hours because it's hurting my neck/back.

Actually it doesn;t give you any right to be more demanding. You have the right to choose/switch :) 5d III it's @ £2500 in your country so 6d has a right price. A little more expensive than a 5DII. Canon marketing is that they increase the AF points if the FPS are high. that would mean that it's a sport camera like 7D.
6D is not meant to be a sport camera hence the 4.5 FPS so you won;t need 19 AF points all cross type to shoot landscape or studio or portraits.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the thread title.

I was hoping for it's release so that the 60D would drop in price!

I currently use a 60D. I want a FF body. Once I see reports of AF performance, I will consider the 6D. It most certainly is an upgrade to FF from the 60D. By the way it has 5D3 style MFA and AUTO ISO configuration options. It mostly will not appeal to current 5D2 or 5D3 users. It was not meant to. It is billed as a full-frame consumer camera. Did you notice the smaller body, 97% VF and SD cards? They scream CONSUMER! I still want a 5D3. The 6D may give this happy snapper a full-frame body for $1500 less than a 5D3 would cost.

It's funny how many people I see claim that the 6D is a marketing blunder, then say "well, I guess I'll have to save up for a 5DIII". Don't you think that this is part of the marketing goal? I think a lot of people continually underestimate the marketing decisions that Canon makes. They don't have to be the most popular or well-liked. They have to make the most money. That is something that they are doing very well and stomping all over Nikon.
