Sigma do have a patent for 500 f4, it is one lens they need to come up with because the 500 f4.5 is out of date and does not take TCs (well anyways). The 300-800 also needs OS to be useable, even on a tripod. Which is suprising they started with 120-300.

Could be because it's quite a popular lens, I think they sell a lot more of those than of the 500mm or the 300-800mm.

The Corvette is a Chevy, does Buick make anything in that category? ;)

For all intents and purposes (and gearheads will back this up) the 'Vette is an outlier, essentially its own brand. ;)

I'm really curious about the USB Dock for the Optimization software. That sounds like a really nice tool. The question is - does the dock use the existing pins on the lens or is there a dedicated connection point for it that is only on the new lenses?

I like the style of the new lenses and I'm really happy with my Sigma gear. The new 120-300 says it is dust and moisture resistant so it looks like they are finally adding some weather sealing. :-)

Altogether it looks like a promising start. Now lets see if they release a 24-70 f2.8 EX DG OS HSM macro with weather sealing. :-)

Wow, that product dock is one of the best things I've ever seen a lens manufacturer come out with. Looks like it can finally end the lottery in AF calibration.

If you buy it yes, but for the users that don't, it might be even worse than before, because Sigma will try less hard to calibrate the AF in the factory.

Supposedly they're working on fixing that, theyre going to test every lens before it ships now..

That said the dock thing is still really useful because of body variation...

Yeah, I read it too. They bought a new machine enabling them to test every lens? I am talking about the long run. I doubt that over a few years, when most of their lineup is compatible with this device, they might save money on their factory calibration, because most users use the device to calibrate themselves. If prices go down and the device is cheaply available, I am pro, but else...

I've been itching to buy the 30 f1.4 for a while now. The 'lottery' is what has prevented me. Maybe now I will be reassured and spend some money in Sigmas direction..........
Good news I think :)

I don't think so. There is a huge market of people who simply don't want to go into that level of detail. They want the things to work right out of the box. An accessory like this probably appeals to a smaller set of the total user base.

If they have a machine testing every lens, it is then easier to do this than to test half or less of the lenses. It is cheaper to get them all right out the door than it is to constantly have people fixing lenses that are sent back under warranty for out of spec focus.

It just doesn't add up that having such a device will make them less careful when they are making this new investment in the first place. If they just released the dock, then I could agree in part because then we could say that this is their "solution" to their QC problems. But the fact that they released this dock AND addressed the QC problems means that they are taking a bold new direction and a swipe at Canon's upper markets. They are moving up stream and really this is where I think they have always wanted to be or they wouldn't have bothered trying to launch their own DSLR.

On another note, I'm curious where that is headed. I can almost see them selling their Foveon sensor design to Canon, killing the SD cameras, and focusing on lenses in the up-scale market where there is more profit to be made than in the camera market. Or perhaps it is the other way around. We know that a big chunk of pros choose Canon because of the lens selection. Maybe they are trying to get an edge there to push more people to their SD models.
