Yeah, I read it too. They bought a new machine enabling them to test every lens? I am talking about the long run. I doubt that over a few years, when most of their lineup is compatible with this device, they might save money on their factory calibration, because most users use the device to calibrate themselves. If prices go down and the device is cheaply available, I am pro, but else...
I don't think so. There is a huge market of people who simply don't want to go into that level of detail. They want the things to work right out of the box. An accessory like this probably appeals to a smaller set of the total user base.
If they have a machine testing every lens, it is then easier to do this than to test half or less of the lenses. It is cheaper to get them all right out the door than it is to constantly have people fixing lenses that are sent back under warranty for out of spec focus.
It just doesn't add up that having such a device will make them less careful when they are making this new investment in the first place. If they just released the dock, then I could agree in part because then we could say that this is their "solution" to their QC problems. But the fact that they released this dock AND addressed the QC problems means that they are taking a bold new direction and a swipe at Canon's upper markets. They are moving up stream and really this is where I think they have always wanted to be or they wouldn't have bothered trying to launch their own DSLR.
On another note, I'm curious where that is headed. I can almost see them selling their Foveon sensor design to Canon, killing the SD cameras, and focusing on lenses in the up-scale market where there is more profit to be made than in the camera market. Or perhaps it is the other way around. We know that a big chunk of pros choose Canon because of the lens selection. Maybe they are trying to get an edge there to push more people to their SD models.
I am serious....and don't call me Shirley.
