It's a pro camera for sure. A camera that can be used by a pro :). I don't mind getting one for $1600 though.

who is the target market for the 6D? 6D is clearly inferior to the 60D in many respects. no pop-up flash commander, no articulating screen, crappy 11pt AF with only 1 cross type, max 1/4000 shutter, 1/180 sync speed. and why no USB 3.0 support in a $2100 camera?! seriously Canon, the year is 2012!

"Why do we need to second guess or defend Canon's decision? The fact of the matter is that they did not include a pop-up flash. If that is a requirement to you, then don't get the camera. Complaining about it doesn't change it."

Sure it will. Those of us who want a built in flash should not only complain about it we should also write Canon. If no-one complains how is Canon to know we want one?

Canon knows. They have a team of product researchers. They also know plenty of people don't want one. So they made a choice.

Regardless, complaining won't get a flash put in the 6D. It's already on the production line.

because the built the GPS and WIFI system on top of the view finder, which is the place where the flash was supposed to be. hence, no pop up flash. but you get to enjoy the built-in wifi and gps capabilities goodness

Someone who'd like the benefits of the full frame sensor (shallow DoF etc) without the expense of the 5D mkIII or buying second hand maybe?

It has, after all, been classified as an entry level FF camera. Please note that I did not say an entry level camera as per the xxxxD series et al. There is no comparison at that level!

Gear still the same. Wife drops in now and again though .

I'm a total noob and I never use the on board flash, with brands like pixel there's not need to ever be crippled by the pop up flash.

Hello all,

I was just wondering if anyone have any idea why the newly announced 6d does not have built in flash?...

I am surprised that nobody has recognized the real and obvious reason. A pop-up flash, by necessity, is very small and light and has rather limited output. Given the greater light fall off of FF and that the FF field of view covers an area approximately 2.8 times that of an APS-C sensor, means that using a built-in flash with the same power output, but modifying the reflector and lens to illuminate the field of view, at least two full stops would be lost and probably more ... since we also need to take into account that the flash output covers an elliptical area and is not rectangular like the FOV. In other words, we would need to basically install a small permanently attached speedlite -- something that would not quite fit into an acceptable form factor for the body.

Canon don't fit one because their target audience are wannabe pros who think that having an onboard flash somehow demeans their camera, and hence their decision-making in buying it.

Nikon have a far simpler approach. They can fit it so they do. That way the user has the option of whether or not to use it. I find the presence of the built-in flash on my 7D very useful on occasion, and its absence from my 5D very irritating on occasion.

Bears out the adage that Nikons are designed by engineers, whereas Canons are designed by their marketing department.

I think I am the target audience for the 6D. I have been using a 60D for about 18 months. Inferior, really? Different, OK. Is the 1DIV 'inferior' to the 60D because it doesn't have a pop-up flash? The 5D3? 5D2? Someone is confused.

The 60D flash commander only handles 2 groups. My 550EX units will handle 3 groups. I am happy they did not include a flippy screen on this camera; I never use the one I have. Crappy is evaluative. As nobody has evaluated this camera yet, this comment is just irrelevant. AnyHOOO... 90% of the time I use center point only. When using a non-center point, my 60D has 8 available cross points. THIS FEATURE BOTHERS ME A BIT. Realistically 1/4000 inconvenient at worst. The 1/180 sync is COMPLETELY irrelevant. Use a Canon flash and use HSS. Or use continuous lighting. This one is a complete non-issue.

The USB thing I don't even understand. Primarily because I just take my card out transfer pictures to PC. The only time my Camera is connected to my computer is to update lens information. I don't do tethered.

You did forget to complain about the SD card. I, coming from a 60D, happen to have 3 16gb and 3 4gb SD cards already. CF would just cost me more money.

As I said, I believe the 6D was designed for me.

1. Question... TSchrief, what's the normal average sync speed you use when using speedlites (outside the studio) ?
