The territorial dispute over islands in the East China Sea has led to anti-Japanese protests across China, and several Japanese firms have shut down their Chinese production lines in the interim.

Canon's affected factories are in the south-east of the country at Zhuhai and Zhongshan in the province of Guangdong, and at Suzhou, near Shanghai.

They can manufacture their products just fine in Japan and the USA. No need to use China. Pass the cost on. Quality is worth it.

I drive a Honda Civic designed in Japan and (engine/tranny) built in Japan, and assembled in the USA. It's a 2001 with 64,000 miles. It starts and drives like the day I bought it. Only problems so far: one replaced headlight (ten bucks), fading black trim (so what), slightly loose ceiling fabric in a couple spots (3 dollar glue), and one broken vanity mirror on the passenger side. Stains in carpet. New tires.

But it starts and drives like the day I bought it eleven years ago for $12,900. It's still worth half that.

Manufacture in Japan. Raise the price. I'll pay it.

Thank you. bw!

I can't believe they're still arguing about that stupid island... And why does everyone assume that just because it's made in China, it's of less quality than if it was made somewhere else. China has it's high end manufacturing places too. It's hard to find a laptop that isn't from China.. Or an iPad.. Hopefully Canon will reopen their factories soon and go back to production at full force!

Those island are significant for three reasons. First, they're very close to Taiwan/China. Second, Control of those islands would give China the ability to control or shut down major shipping lanes that pass through there. Third, in the early 70's natural gas and oil deposits were discovered under those islands. Since then China has decided that it's in their best interest to control those islands, even though they have been under Japanese dominion for well over 100 years.
This isn't the first time China has pushed the issue. They did in it in the 90's as well.

Well I meant that the fight is stupid in a sense that the the island BELONGS to Japan. Regardless what any country can do with that island, if it's under the power of another country, it's under the power of another country.

I think workers in China can be just as skilled as those in other parts of the world. What troubles me is the lack of oversight, safety regulation and employee rights and working conditions. That's why I have no problem buying foreign made products from Korea, Japan, Germany.

The US used to be the place everything was made because they also had cheap labor with crap safety and working conditions. Then we fixed that which raised cost of labor and so the big companies moved on to the next country with no oversight. As soon as China starts taking care of their workers, the same thing will happen. Hopefully someday there is no cheap unregulated labor force left to exploit.

Well, they are actually owned by a private japanese family. The reason China is pushing the issue again is that the Japanese national government is moving to purchase the islands from the family and bring them under national control. China doesn't want the Japanese government to have an "outpost" so close to China. Granted I agree that they are Japanese islands and should remain as such, but there's not much we can do now but let them fight it out. The scary thing is that China can pretty much paralyze Japan and the US through their debt holdings. They have enough leverage now they think they might actually win, so they're going for it.

Only if we agree to their terms. It would pretty easy to default on Chinese debt if it was in the national interest.

I can see where China is worried. Imagine if someone decided to sell Catalina Island to the Russians or Chinese?

I'm working in remote China at the moment but I saw on the news people smashing up Japanese cars, dragging owners from their cars and beating them up also.

Malaysia, Thailand are lower in the totem pole than China.
Also, Africa is next I'm afraid... China is already massively investing all over the continent.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!
