What do you think? Is buying a 5Dc pointless now since the announcement of the 6D and it's approximate price tag of $2000? I've been looking hard at 5Dc's but now I'm not too sure.

Well, price difference is pretty big, even in Europe they sell for 700€ so you could save a fortune. 5D still takes some of the best pictures a Canon ever could. You might miss AF adjust or live view but otherwsie stellar camera. Wish I had kept mine.

I have a 5Dc and a 5D2.

I am not all that old but I believe I will allow my descendants to deal with the sale of my 5Dc. Until then, I am holding onto it.

Price tag is actually $2100 AFAIK. And since you can get a used 5Dc for $800 or so now, the question is simply this: does $1300 difference matter to you? Glancing at the spec sheet I would guess the 6D to be a big improvement in almost every way over the 5Dc, so are those improvements worth $1300 to you? They aren't to me, but I'm not spending your money ;)

The 5Dc is still a highly capable camera. Wether it will work for you, more depends on how you will use it and what you will be shooting. It still has more than enough to keep a lot of shooters happy.

i believe that the 5Dc is still capable and I plan to use it specifically for portraits. I guess I still just get caught up in the spec wars which is strange because before digital none of camera except my 35mm needed batteries! I'm guess there is a floor that the price of the 5Dc will bottom out to and not go much further so possible resale value wouldn't be bad.

5Dc user here. If you have very good glass to match this camera IQ already, why not 6D if you have money. If you don't have L or Zeiss glass, get it first.
I'm not going to jump on 6D right now. I'll wait for price drop and fw upgrade.
For me it is smaller, weather sealed body and nothing else.
I hope it will help my wife with face recognition if it is in auto mode. Current Canon automode is total garbage in terms of AF for portraits. It just throughing AF at something else, not on the face.

You're really not going to be able to beat the going prices for used 5Dc's. If price isn't an issue, you can wait for the 6D release or get a second hand 5DII. However, the 5Dc is still a great camera body. If you don't mind the age of it and some of it's limations, I would go with that.

If you buy a 5Dc now, the shutter may fail sooner than you want. I believe it's around $200 for a new one.

Yeah my EF lens line up is limited. 28mm Zeiss MF lens, 50 1.8, 85 1.8, Tamron 70-300. Most of the time I'm using the 85 so that should keep up okay with the 5Dc. I'm waiting to see what the new Tamron 70-200 2.8 looks before buying that or the Siggy. How much are the lenses I have going to struggle with the 5Dc?

I'm not too worried about the physical limitations of the camera namely the AF so much as until digital I was strictly MF anyhow (med. format and large formats).

Actually, now that the 6D is released, it's pointless to buy a 6D.

Compared to the 5D, what actual features do you get for 3x the cost of a 5D that will translate into better pictures?
GPS tagging (gadget feature)?
Video recording (gadget feature, real videographers will use 5D2/3)?
Wireless (gadget feature, real studio pros will use 1D series)?
More megapixels (gadget feature, most people never print large enough to need more than 6 to 10 MP)?

My point being, you will likely get equally good real world shots from both. The 6D is clearly geared towards the gadget crowd who wants an "entry level" FF with bells and whistles but is willing to pay 3x the price of the actual entry level FF, a used 5D.

Suppose you do need video or 20MP or make the mistake of buying new on heavily depreciating tech equipment. The 5D2 is available new for $200 less than the 6D. That's clearly a better choice for an entry level FF. And used it's available for an even better price.

Also, here are the shutter ratings:
5D2 - 150k
6D - 100k
5D - 100k

So the used 5D2 will likely outlive a new 6D. I know people get paranoid buying used, but which makes more sense: Buy a new 6D and spend $2k, or buy a used 5D, spend $700, and if it breaks you can buy 2 more and still be at the same price. It's better to spend less and maybe have to spend more later than to be guaranteed to spend more upfront.

Then, throw in lenses:

6D with 24-105 - $2,900
5D with 35L, 85 f1.8, 135L - $2,800

Which do you think turns out better pictures, at roughly the same cost? I would definitely go with a 5D or 5D2 and put the savings towards lenses or my bank account than buy a 6D.

If you are shooting stuff that doesn't move much and are comfortable with MF, I think the 5D is what you want. The original 5D works well for people that compose their shots in the way they would with, like you say, a MF camera. If you need quick shots (either due to what you shoot, or an ADD style) then a 7D or 5D3 will be more useful in terms of AF, auto iso, etc. The 5D is definitely slower to use (I manually set the ISO for each shot) but the results of being more contemplative and less "Squirrel!" CLICK reactionary have made my photos/results much more enjoyable to me.

Its still about a $1300 difference between the two. Its not like the 5DC suddenly stopped being a great camera.
