I spent a semester in high school old school, Nikon 35mm, b/w film, silver gelatin prints. It was 1975 or so. In 1996 I started to pick it up again and spent 2 years at Foothill Jr College in Los Altos. I highly recommend going to a good school just for the exposure (no pun intended). Photography is half science and half art and that is a really interesting combination. Nothing in photography is free. It takes work to realize a vision and make it happen.

I'll second Leigh's point, a more business oriented course would serve you better in terms of setting up a business.

The four year photography course I did had a business component in the final year. Including a heap of chemistry, physics and mathematics throughout the entire course.

There is certainly a stage where defining ones style is a self taught process. That's beauty of a unique vision.
