Wrong for a sports photog, ... I don't know what you guys are thinking but heres my thoughts ;)As a sports photographer, I would recomend Mark II with 24-70MM 2.8 for close shots such as catches......Mark II With 70-2002.8 IS for far away,2 580EX Flashes, 8 spare batteries , 2 spare charged battery for the Marks with Charger ,Radio Shack 15 Min Charger, Monopod with 400M 2.8 IS With assistant:p, Dell Laptop, cell phone, and lots of Flash cards and Credentials, now this is the "ultimate"you guys really didn't mention the above what a sports Photog really needs other than fast primes...But what also would be ultimate is if Canon made a 600MM F1.8 with IS and capable of traveling.

I guess I was still being reasonably realistic, but if we want to go Sports Illustrated Ultimate.

Multiple 1DMKII bodies with primes(600,500,400,300) depending upon the event paired with 70-200 2.8 IS along with 16-35 and 24-70 around.

Then the other stuff you mention and one guy who carries around all his equipment.

Thats too much stuff ;) that will drag With weight you unless you have an assistant, which is already carrying your bag, laptop, and the 400MM2.8 IS.

ACDC..... share some of your sports shots ... all I have seen was your "volleyball is easy" post unless I may have missed some others. Plenty of trains... just not many sports shots. Common - quite holding back on us here.

Who's to say it's just one slave, err I mean assistant.

I'd say probably 4 bodies on hand(2 with the camera man), and the rest with the other lens. :)

theres a few threads, all from the Noink and 50MM (was saving up for a Canon 20D, Canon 70-200IS, 580EX Etc, and still am... So the 50M was the last lens I bought from Nikon, I figure I should get it instead of waisting my time getting dark/horrble shots ;),

i've been/still an assistant , it's not fun lol, you move 5 feet, stop for a few minutes, move 10 feet stop, Drink Sir? move 5 feet stop. 15LBS of glass and everything you would need to survive for the next month on a photographic shoot ;)....Man....it knocks the heck out ya, your spine litterly kills.
At the football games, mud gets all over you nice, brand new reeboks, and a cowinsidence you wear tan pants. Freezy cold 32F standing on a sideslines, nothing like it, and get paid for it, but wait I just ruined a pair of reeboks;)

I use a 1d and a 1DMKII 70-200 f2.8 lens Sigma 120-300 2.8 and 100-400 L lens as wellas a number of others. If you want to shoot sports get ready to lay out a lotof money for lenses. There is no camera as good as the 1D or 1DmkII or a MKII N Ithey focus faster and just bang out the shots. The 20D is an ok compromise but you will miss more shots with it depending upon what sport you are shooting. More of the great shots here or anywhere shot by pros use those 1D varity. it is a heavy big camera but it is tought and durable and made to shot sports in almost any condition. Good luck wiht what ever you cpome up with. I can tell you this once you use a 1D you will want one.

I mainly shoot sports and have been deciding for the past few months on what is best for what I need.

Today I just ordered the 20D and the 85mm f/1.8 -- from what I hear, the latter is excellent for indoor sports because of its speed... and also it's pretty darn sharp. Since it's winter, I'll mostly be shooting indoor sports (volleyball, basketball, hockey, soccer, track & field), but once it warms up I'll be investing in either a 135mm f/2.0L or a 70-200mm f/2.8L -- both quality lenses.

From what I've researched, the 20D is the way to go for sports if you can't afford a 1D series body.
