Screw the lens ratings, we are talking about sensors here which in my opinion DXO does a very accurate and thorough job at. What do you see wrong with their sensor tests?

Their ratings do not hold up well when attempting to compare across different formats, and to a lessor extent when attempting to compare between sensors with significantly different pixel counts.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

The one that holds a lot of water is their test on the D800 sensor. Yes, it dies blow the 5d3 sensor doors off and I've seen enough real world examples to support this. Do you have examples that contradict this?

I've personally owned both cameras and I concur: the D800's sensor is considerably superior to the 5D III. The DR is just in a whole other league. And the image quality in the underexposed areas is pretty astonishing as compared with the 5D III.

I think we all fully understand that DXO is only measuring a sensor and not the whole camera. Sensor aside, imo the 5D III "blows the doors off" the D800 and having owned both I can appreciate why whole-camera reviewers, like dpreview, give both cameras similar overall ratings.

Although I truly appreciated the D800 sensor quality, I sold mine and got the 5D III, knowing full-well that the 5D III represented a step back in raw conversion latitude as compared with the D800. But, I did it in order to be a lot happier in other key respects (like a truly wonderful Live View system and access to the best available wide-angle tilt-shifts). I wish I could shoot and enjoy the benefits of both systems, and the D600's lower price has me thinking about it. I probably won't return to Nikon though, as I have too many lens acquisition dreams to be able to afford/support two systems.

Anyway, as an owner/user of both D800 and 5D III, I thought I'd weigh in to say that, testing methodolgy credibility aside, I agree with DXO's overall conclusions that the D800's sensor is considerably superior to the 5D III's. And that suggests that I would likely have a similar experience with the D600s sensor.

Rather late to this thread but to add my experience...

I had a 5DmkII since it came out and loved it. Sadly some scumbag broke in to my house and stole everything so I had to start again. While sorting insurance that took months I needed something cheap to see me through and the hype over the Nikon D3200 and the DXO score made me buy it. What a let down. Noise at ISO 100, soft, just not nice at all.

I tried the 5DmkIII and the D800e and went Nikon as I got such a crisper image with bags more DR etc etc. The thing is, having had such a bad experience with the D3200 I quickly realised that DXO ratings are of little use. As with many things on the web, you have to verify with several sources and try things out yourself to be really sure.

You went from full-frame to crop - of course the IQ wasn't quite there. Also, a 100% crop from the D3200 represents a much higher magnification than 100% on the 5D2.

DXO is a good comparison of the quality of a sensor per unit of sensor area. Your full-frame sensor had 2.25 times the area of the D3200 sensor, so it doesn't need to be anywhere near as good to give you a better overall image.

OK, I believe the sensor ratings.
Now tell me why their lens ratings are useless?

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!
