I know I'm probably being a bit of a dummy here but:

I normally shoot sports with my 7D in jpg mode,,, I do OK,, picture quality is great. I took a bunch of photos in RAW last weekend but I just can't get them to look as good as the JPG's I usually get out of my 7d. I'm using LR but no matter how I twiddle the NR, sharpening etc, contrast, exposure etc etc ,,, I just can't do it.

What I'm basically asking is how I can process 700+ RAW files so I can make them EXACTLY like they would look if I had shot them in JPG in the first place.

Respectfully, I'm not looking for photography tips,,, just a way to replicate the JPG settings of my 7D.

Thanks!

Juck

In the Develop module, go down to Camera Calibration. The Profile dropdown list is supposed to replicate Canon's in-camera processing (ie camera faithful, landscape, portrait, etc.)

Use DPP that comes with your camera, that will give the closest match.

If you want them to look just like jpegs, just shoot jpeg.

DPP is designed to replicate camera processing, LR can at best resemble it and that takes some work.

Simple.

When your 7D creates the raw file it also creates a jpeg image using the settings in the camera. This jpeg is then embedded inside the raw file; it's used to display the image on the back of the camera.

Several bits of software also use this embedded jpeg to display the image - programs like FastStone and Irfanview. You can also save the jpeg from within these programs, but I'm not sure if you can do it in a batch.

But a bit of software called Instant Jpeg from Raw (external link) can do the extraction as a batch job. Just install IJfR, open an explorer window showing the raw files, select them all and right-click, IJfR comes up as an option. You can save the extracted jpeg images to a different folder and even re-size them on the way.

This is why I love this site, as another noob I learn something handy every time I visit thanks to those who take the time to answer questions. Much appreciated.

Frank -
I know that in my 40D, and in the 350D I once had, the embedded jpg is roughly half sized in the linear dimensions, which is 1/4 sized by area or MP count, but my 5D2 has a full sized jpg. Do you know what the 7D has? I imagine that the complaints people used to post about the poor quality of the LCD image when magnified caused the change.

However, even when the embedded jpg is full sized it is very compressed, to save space, and there can be a visible loss of quality and/or compression artefacts, which is why - IMHO - the DPP route is preferable.

The 7D jpeg is full-sized, so no problem there.

I did a comparison between the embedded jpeg and one produced from the raw file by DPP using the default settings. The DPP jpeg was 10MB, the extracted one was 8MB. Here's a crop showing how similar they are..
