I use a Manfrotto 290 tripod with 293 RC-1 head. Has worked fine for me. While shooting the NYC skyline from Hoboken tonight, the 7D (gripped) and 70-200 2.8 IS combo started to slip down on the vertical axis while in portrait orientation. The RC-1 was fitted to the tripod collar. So fast, in fact, that i could visibly see it moving in the viewfinder as I was composing, and toward the end of my session, I could no longer shoot with this combo in portrait orientation - even relatively quick exposures showed blur.

I checked all the fittings and tightened everything, seemed fine. The RC-1 release was not apparently moving, and everything was tightened down. Landscape was fine, as were smaller lenses, but this combo would simply not hold on the tripod.

Is there an adjustment I should make (as a maintenance item), or is the head just too small? Its rated for over 8.5 pounds so I would think it would be fine.

I have one more night here and a rental car so I am open to suggestions on how I might fix it, and more places to shoot!

Thanks!

I am an idiot! Thanks all, for not responding, and forcing the contemplation that revealed the answer in a moment of clarity just after a well deserved afternoon nap today.

Please do not discount me after such a "cluster" of a post...

EnjoY the rest of the weekend!
