Need some advice 17-40L or Tamron 17-50(Studio work)

I am planning to start doing more studio work in the next up comming months. With me shooting in a small space a 70-200 is going to be too long for my tiny studio. Going through the above stated lens threads makes me miss the Tamron glass so much after owning it when I first began my venture into photography. Lately I have been thinking about purchasing it again. Either another Tammy or the 17-40L. I have also been seeing a lot of 17-40L on craigslist locally for around $500 bucks. Anyone care to chime in?

I currently have a Samyang 35mm(glued to my camera) which I would not trade for the world but now I wouldn't mind having something with auto focus for studio work.

with something that wide you will be prone to distortion....and not the flattering kind.

Shooting close with those wider lenses is likely to cause perspective distortion, so go with the longest lens you can make work in the space you have. Personally I wouldnt consider either of those lenses for studio work, but you have to do what you have to do. I guess the tammy so you can at least hit 50.

Would either of you maybe consider a 24-105mm? I have seen a few of them at a reasonable price lately. The only problem I have with getting a 50mm is that I prefer the Sigma 50 1.4 over the Canon(IQ wise and because it shares the same 77mm thread size as my 35mm 1.4) but with me shooting on a crop body the lens is more like an 85mm if im not mistaken.

24-105 is a great lens for portraits. the limiting factor is the f/4 aperture, but if you are doing studio work with lights, that probably won't affect you much. as for filters, I typically buy 77mm filters and use step-up rings if my other lenses use smaller filter sizes.

I love my 24-105 for studio work. Its the go to lens for me when I'm not worried about shallow DOF.

I would go for a 17-50 over a 17-40 since you are shooting crop, but first you really need to figure out what focal length you have space for. What vertical and horizontal size do you want to shoot at? How far away can you be? How much space between the subject and background do you have?

I don't see why anyone would get a 17-40L on a crop- have you thought about the tamron 28-75mm f2.8?

IMO, its not even close. The Tamron on a crop for sure. It is a great lens, and studio work is where it will shine. ATP (Alex Tirado Photography) uses it with a 7d and his work speaks for itself.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Going to look more into the mentioned lenses Tamron 28-75 f2.8, Canon 24-105 F4 and 24-70 f2.8. I will do a few test shoots with the my current setup before I make any big purchases to find out what exact focal length will work best. Thanks for the help POTN

I'd go with Tamron for an extra reach. Those 10mm on the longer end really DO matter
