If you're going to use any filter at all on your L glass, better make it a good one or IQ will suffer.

Other than protecting the front element, the merits of a UV filter on a DSLR are debatable.

A CPL is not a UV. If you're shooting motorsports and want to reduce reflections on glass/shields, buy a quality CPL.

That said, I always protect my glass with a filter of some sort when shooting motorsports. Just my personal preference.

There is no need for a filter on a lens unless you are going for special effects of some type. Save your money for a filter that will do you some good. Circular polarizer or maybe a graduated neutral density.
