If you're going to use any filter at all on your L glass, better make it a good one or IQ will suffer.
Other than protecting the front element, the merits of a UV filter on a DSLR are debatable.
A CPL is not a UV. If you're shooting motorsports and want to reduce reflections on glass/shields, buy a quality CPL.

That said, I always protect my glass with a filter of some sort when shooting motorsports. Just my personal preference.
