24-70 MKI vs MKII

In reality my 24-70 will be delivered tomorrow. I am going to hopefully replace my 35, 50 and 24-105 with the new 24-70 MKII. BUT in reality it has to feel right because I like all three of those lenses. I might really miss the 71-105 mm. I also might miss the creativity of the primes. in reality I might not. I will test it out and see, in reality it might be listed in the buy/sell forum by next weekend....

LOL Yeah I realize how many times I used that word as I was quoting the OP. You seem to be quite fond of the word as well. The new Canon 24-70L II is a very nice piece of glass and no doubt will be a stellar performer but in the end it does not have IS, 71-105mm focal length or a 1.2 or 1.4 aperture so in reality it is no good to me no matter how great of a lens it is...but that is how I roll. I hope it works out for you but I know for me there is no way it could ever replace my 24-105L or any of my fast primes.

I wonder why some people take Lensrental reviews much more seriously than pure review sites like theDigitalPicture and Photozone. I mean isn't lensrental a money making business which just purchased several copies of the new lens waiting for customers to rent so of course they have to say some positive things about it while the review sites don't really need the new lens to be super good to make money. It's just like asking Apple how good the new Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs are compared to the older Sandy Bridge...

For me, it's the fact that Lensrentals usually tests multiple copies of lenses with multiple camera bodies which mitigates some of the effects of variation.

lensrental isnt really a review, it's a benchmark.

Well, there's the counterpoint that Lensrentals has 230 copies of the Mk I sitting on the shelf compared to 5 copies of the Mk II, none of which are available to rent no matter what I said in the blog post. I actually got rather a bit of grief from the new owners about "Did you have to be soooo positive about the lens we can't get?"

Correction - it's 10 copies now. But still . . .

And as someone said above - I'm not a reviewer. Just have the opportunity to put out a benchmark and range on multiple copies, which actual reviewers don't get the opportunity to do.

^the exposures aren't set the same...

Mine goes from "Backordered" to "In Stock, Order sent to warehouse" moments before B&H closes for the holiday.

So I wait until Monday...

Oh be careful... I asked the same thing a few weeks ago and the rain came down like a thunderstorm in the heat of summer.

But maybe we could ask Apple how their new Maps program is working out for them.

I was actually questioning the hype created by many in this forum on how great this new lens is rather than what you said in your articles some of which I do find very informative. Some of the members seem to rather take a benchmark more seriously than an in depth review made by those who don't seem to be biased in any way. well in theDigitalPicture's case the reviewer has generally been very positive with all the Canon L lenses

I know weird Eh? I dont know how the Digital Picture can express glowing reviews for a lens that has in his words has:

Don't get me wrong I like those reviews but if I had two copies of a lens and they both had different issues and I had to return one I wouldn't be writing such a warm review.

I just cannot believe that this lens has had such bad reviews. I was expecting the forums would be filled with bragging threads by now but it's been nothing but silence so far. I'm inclined to say the lens has been nothing but disappointing so far, certainly far from 70-200 IS II's success. Maybe in a year's time things will improve, but copy variation in this lens has been there since the early versions of the MKI and it is the number one reason why people hate this focal length.

I dont think there has been one bad review. I think there are a lot of very high expectations to get over. Every review appears to gush about the IQ and the build. I like mine so far. The price? Not so much. I am still trying to justify that and if I cant then I wont keep it.....
