Just wondering if anyone has shot any Body building competitions? I'd imagine no flash can be used ? I'd be shooting with a 5D MKIII. Plus I heard you might not be allowed?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

I have not seen flash used but you could ask the producer of the competition. If they allow a flash, put a gel on it to match the tungston and use for a little fill only. They will have harsh lights from whatever stage is being used and they will create the dimensional lighting of the competitors. on camera flash as main light will create flat subjects, shadows, red eye, etc.

It's been quite some time, but as I recall, the competitors al all oiled up, most have very unnatural fake tans, and the lighting is horrible. So you have shiny, off color skin tones (and they wear very little, so there's a lot of skin) that you have to balance with a variety of light sources. Not an easy assignment, unless you want to print in black and white.

It's been about a year since I've been to a body building competition but they had a hired photographer there, & he brought in a couple of strobes. But I'm sure it varies with each show.
