I have exactly the same opus lighting as you mention. I use a Rebel XT and to fire the lights properly I needed to use the hotshoe adapter with a cable pluged into one of the strobes - which was set to master and the other to slave.

This does work! Get yourself a simple flash meter and all the headaches are gone.
