PLEASE HELP WITH THE 85 1.2

Okay I bought this lens and thought I would love it because I rented it and loved it. I am so absolutely frustrated with this lens...

I sometimes (rarely) get a an focused images but most of the time EVERYTHING IS OUT OF FOCUS!

I am a back button shooter. I don' t know if my camera is off or me. My shutter speed is not below 250. I am posting pics. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF IT's ME OR MAYBE I HAVE BAD LENS????

Please... someone help!!! I am so confused, I might not have my bb settings correct for this lens? Maybe the af is not working? What am I doing wrong?

can you get a sharp manual focus?

Oh thank you! YEs, I can... but I don't use manual focus...

If you look at the image, nothing is in focus. So not sure where the focus point is going. I do recompose alot, is that effecting it?

Try using center focus and don't recompose. Shooting at 1.2 and recomposing makes it difficult to obtain sharp focus. This should tell you if the lens has a problem or it's user error. Does your camera focus properly with other lenses? If yes you may have a dirty contact on the 85 lens (assuming the lens isn't faulty otherwise). Does your model camera allow you to see the selected focus point when viewing on the rear screen? If not you can view the image in DPP and see the selected point.

Recompose...that’s the reason....

I don't know if this image has been cropped, but if not, the subject's face is almost in the center of the frame, so focus and re-compose may not be the problem. I can't see anything that's really in sharp focus.

I have the 5d mark2. So you think it is my recomposing that is the problem? Should I not try to recompose when using this lens. I was shooting at a 4 earlier dead center no recomposing and used bbf then manual adjusted the focus and got a clear shot?

recomposing being the issue doesn't make sense, not it if all of the OP's AF shots are out of focus.

having used my 85L on my 5d2 for years i will tell you this...

focus recompose does not work well with the 85L especially when shooting wide open. the closer you are to the subject the more crucial it is.

and as far as using the outside points to shoot on the 5d2... good luck with that too. the 5d2 has 1 AF point... the center.

its focus is in the front. the leaves on the right are pretty clear. i have shot head/shoulder shots with the 85L and focus recomposed. i would focus on the eye and move the camera back to where the center point is on the nose. not a far distance... shot way off and eye not in focus

You need one of those new cameras with new AF systems that have 61 AFs and 41 of those are cross type, hint hint, 5d mark 3 Problem solved. As everyone else said, this is a typical problem for 50L and 85L. You need to try moving your focus point and don't recompose.

The best way to determine the problem is to get the camera/lens on a solid tripod and do some test to eliminate all other variables.

My guess is focus/recompose.

post exif data.. was this shot at f1.2?

Have you MA'd the camera to lens at all? Looks like it might be front focusing. Seems like the sharpest point is the edge of the tree she's standing on closest to camera..
