1st attempt off camera flash/bright ambient background

Here's my first attempt using off camera flash for fill while trying to properly expose the bright background. the first pic is the unaltered version, the second is touched up. Please let me have it! I really want to learn how to do a good job of this. thanks.

its worth watching the video just to watch the assistant holding the flash. looks like he came from the carnival.

Get a light meter and make the shot look like you want it without processing
