Does anyone have this combo and comment on the AF speed of this lens? Would it be useable indoors/outdoors following around kids/toddlers? Please do consider 5D3's 61 point AF system before answering, I don't recompose. I also have 70-200 IS II, unfortunately ISO 6400 is as far as this camera goes for portraits in my book, which is why I need the 85L.

I'm using it on a 1dx, and I have no problems with the AF speed, but it's not the fastest lens in the range.
Definitely need to get the II, the I is a very slow

Im using this combo. I don't have kids/toddlers, but Ive used it recently for a very active puppy :p The AF speed is only slow on initial lock (going from infinity, for example) - once it has its focus plane - say you are using it with AI Servo - it makes the minor adjustments fast enough to keep up without any issues.

Thanks for the responses. Also, are you concerned with lack of weather sealing? Do you use this lens in light rain? I also have 35L and I am scared of using it outside when it rains.

I used it in very light rain today - spitting, not exactly raining. I was careful with it, tried to put myself under a tree (lol) when I could. I'm not sure how much water it can stand, so I was just being overly cautious :)

Either way, was no worse for wear.

Daylight = Awesome

Very low light = Terribly slow to lock focus. As bad if not worse than 5D2

Accuracy is better though

I tend to miss a lot of photos because the lens can't lock focus. For example, if 2 people are going for a hug and I instantly react, sometimes the focus still hasn't locked by the time they have finished hugging (missing the shot)

If you have a 2x canon converter for your 70-200, the AF is about as fast as a 85L.

Well, I want to buy this lens specifically for low light. If you are saying its that bad then it defeats the purpose:(

My useage of low light will be indoors, so not really too low, we are talking about 125-160 shutter, F1.2-1.4, for ISO 1600-6400. Basically anything that 70-200 IS II would require ISO 12800 and above.

Also, based on this 85L is weather sealed (with a UV filter, which is fine) :

Can anyone look at the link I posted and comment on whether this lens is really weather sealed? http://digital-photography-school.com …sealing-canon-lenses.html (external link)

I have been reading somewhere here that the 85L's AF speed is much better when using this lens on the 5D3 compare to the 5D2... Some of the AF speed complaints area likely to disappear in the future :)
