permits. Good grief. Anyone that has shot weddings knows that lot of spontaneity goes into doing wedding portraits. So for the guy that has 50 weddings in year, he is to sit down and plan out, on a map, specifically each sidewalk or set of steps he or she is going to use for a backdrop through the entire timespan of the session, determine if there is enough manoeuvrability (street vs. sidewalk, for example) fill out the necessary permit paperwork, then have an assistant cordon each and every permitted area before the session begins. That's simply not the way it works, or ever will, despite how safety is supposed to be the number one factor above all other planned steps.
Maybe I'm just being cynical because in my city, nearly all business is shut down over the weekend, downtown, making traffic drop drastically. I have had an entire wedding party walk arm-in-arm down the street for a photo. I am first and foremost attentive to traffic. Roadways here are quite short and thus speeds are slow. There is plenty of reaction time and I clear the roads for incoming vehicles with time to spare before a problem is made.
Keep in mind I personally am not a fan of these shots, and very rarely do them. They tend to be enthusiastic requests by the bride, to which I am happy to oblige. Often I shoot on the sidewalks and need a telephoto to achieve a specific amount of depth compression. I will go into the streets to get this type shot - on the weekend, but on weekdays - hell no.
