So I went out to shoot with my new 70-200 f4L today, and I'm in love with it. I wasn't shooting anything crucial, so I was using Parameter 1 large JPEG. That, combined with the fact that this image hasn't been post-processed at all, just adds to how impressed I am with the lens. It was on a 20D body.

Here's a 100% crop. The sharpness, contrast, and color look pretty damn good to me. It looks even a little better on the original, saving it for the web degraded it slightly.

own it and love it, works pretty good with a kenko pro 1.4 teleconverter for a little more reach as well as kenko extension tubes for macro.

Maybe I enjoyed Christmas too much but that shot looks pretty OOF to me.

Well, it was shot wide open and it was focused on the butterfly's body. The outside parts of its wings (which are not in this crop) are outside the DOF and the top of its head seems to be at the edge of the DOF as well, which is why it's softer than the bottom of its body. The shot also hasn't been sharpened at all. Look at the miniscule hairs where the wings meet the body. The fact that you can see the individual hairs would indicate to me that it's in focus and sharp.

Do you guys think the whole frame is OOF or only the top half? I agree the top half is softer, but the bottom looks focused to me.

All of it. You could apply minimal unsharp mask and see how it goes. To be honest, you'd be better trying a different subject if you want to just check it out: something like a colourful and well contrasted box of cereal in decent light and stick the lens on a tripod or monopod or something secure to minimise shake. You can get more colour, pop, contrast and sharpness from it. Add a good eye (or two!!) and you're sorted ;-)a

A lot variables can play into the overall results. Namely if handholding: is the shutter fast enough? Is the user steady enough?

If checking for sharpness I'd setup a tripod with a release switch. And yes that image does look slightly soft to me.

I just went back and looked through a lot of my shots today, and in comparison to most of the keepers, the one i posted is indeed kinda soft. I basically just picked one of the shots I liked and cropped it, I probably should have taken a second to make sure it was also one of the ones that was the best technically.

Maybe tomorrow I will do a more controlled test, but in real world conditions today, the lens performed very well, so unless there's some glaring problem in a traditional test, I'd say it's all good.

I have some duck shots from today that I can post, if people would like that better than my slightly hazy butterfly.
