Hi,

The butterfly was OOF to me also (even after Christmas weekend), but the duck it is pretty nice. The 70-200 it´s very sharp, so I suspect you were taken the butterfly photo in the AF nearest limit. Any way you will enjoy it a lot !!

Cheers
Juan

It is an outstanding lens. Though I intend to get the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, I still with probably keep the F4L.

The 70-200mm f/4 L USM and the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM ar by far the best lenses i've seen.
And i have used quite a few good lenses : EFS 10-22, 50mm f/1.8, 24-70 f/2.8 L, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L, 100mm f/2.8 Macro, 85mm f/1.8 USM, 17-40mm f/4 L, EFS 17-85mm. There is a huge quality gap between them.

Compared to f/2.8 IS L the f/4 is by far the superior lens (i use both on a daily basis).

PS: in my experience any filter you use on the 70-200 L (both f/4 and 2.8 IS) significantly cripples them. Dump the UV. The hood provides more then enough protection.

I don't suppose anyone noticed that the butterfly was a 100% crop while the duck was evidently the full image?

Yeah, the duck was the full image. I wanted to show the whole duck, and otherwise the file would not have fit. Here are two more 100% crops from shots I took today of cereal boxes, following the advice in earlier posts.

They were taken outside in broad daylight. The shots were handheld, but at shutter speeds of 1600 or higher, so hand shake shouldn't have been an issue. Both crops are from shots taken at f/8. The first one is taken from an image which had the two cereal boxes filling the whole frame. In the second image, they were only filling the center of the frame. What does everyone think?

Those look pretty good but to really test a Lens for sharpness you need a tripod and a release/self timer even to rule out human error. Also start at the maximum aperture being f/4 in this case.

The butterfly looks out of focus but the other shots look fine. It's a great lens - enjoy!
