I'd say thats a very reliable "source" lol

Still interesting, Will it be the same or less expensive than the 120-300? Will it be more expensive?

Just seen this, how nice if it stays reasonable price wise.

Curious, why would people buy this over their recently announced 120-300 2.8 OS?

Primes tend to be much sharper than zooms. It will also probably be lighter and not as expensive.

I assume that the big companies don't build a 120-300 because they aren't super sharp.

I don't know but it's probably out of my budget

I agree that a 120-300 2.8 probably doesn't have much of a market, which is why Sigma seems to be the only one, but...

A 120-300 is essentially a scaled-up 70-200 - in fact the 120-300 has a lower zoom-ratio than a 70-200. So it should be about 1.5 times the lineal dimensions of a 70-200, and probably 2 to 2.5 times the weight...which I think is true for the Sigma 120-300 compared to the Sigma 70-200.

So whatever the quality of optics that can produce a 70-200 should be able to do the same for a 120-300. Canon makes a pretty good 70-200, from what I hear ;), so in theory a 120-300 from them could be quite spectacular.

I think the Sigma 120-300 2.8 gets a fair treatment here, much like their 70-200 2.8 OS. The Siggy 70-200 2.8 OS isn't as good as the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II, but also isn't as expensive.

And the 300 2.8 is about 10% lighter than the 120-300 2.8 (non-OS), so it is a mild weight savings.

Anyway, this gets a bit tangential/moot, since the current Sigma 300 2.8 is discontinued, but retailed for about the same as or a little less than the 120-300 non-OS. So I would imagine any Sigma 300 2.8 OS would retail for a little less than the 120-300 2.8 OS, maybe at ~US$3000.

I would be surprised if Sigma didn't eventually release an OS version of their discontinued 300 2.8...

Sigma's new 120-300 f/2.8 OS was a champ optically, and it took a 2x TC pretty well on top of it giving you a 240-600 f/5.6... Go check out some of Gabeblazas work with it.. its biggest weakness was so-so AF speed (which really wasnt THAT bad but not on the level of a 300 prime) and apparently a big design flaw in the electronics which lead to them failing in quite a few peoples copies

Anyways.. I'd say its going to be priced close to the 120-300 but it will be lighter and probubly a little sharper, the AF might be quicker as well...

Goes nicely with their new S-line lenses :)

Sigma's 300 2.8 OS may well have been leaked, check out Nikon rumors where a Sigma presentation had it on a list of their lenses. Of course eventually the 500 and 300-800 will also get OS, I hope. Although I would prefer to see the 300-800 5.6 move to 300-600 f4-5.6, or something similar.

probably because most sports shooters use a set of primes

I find it strange that they'd launch a 300 2.8 OS with the EX designation. With their recently announced change to (C)ontemporary, (A)rt & (S)ports branding, surely it should fit into the sports range?

List could be from before they did that or something..

I am interested to see how it matches up to their current 300 2.8 that is IMO already a great lens build and opticly.

I just hope Sigma comes out with a 400 2.8 or even makes a new 500mm at f/4 like canons appose to 4.5 for around their current price.

I shoot a little black box with a round thingy ma-giggy in the front.

I want one of these lenses, I had decided on the 120-300 mki over the 300mm mki but now there are a mkii of both of these models I will wait and decide when they are out... I chose the mki 120-300 over the 300 in the end due to the OS but if the 300 now has OS I think I would want that extra sharpness you get with prime glass a added OS with next gen quality...

Anyone wanting new glass at current prices is expecting too much. Canon hiked prices right up which send out the signal to everyone else. Even if the new models are 60% of Canon prices that will mean a hike!
