My typical European beach holiday gear is 5D2 & 50/1.4 :)

I'm tempted to pick up a wider prime though somethign like the 28/1.8 & use that on the 450D to travel even lighter.

pancake or 35mmF2 + 6D

I'm still waiting for the pancake F2. That's probably the one lens that I would replace the 50L with.

I came back a few weeks ago from two weeks in Puero Vallarta Mexico. Took 2985 photos with my DSLR. Yes, almost three thousand.

I've made it a habit to carry my DSLR everywhere... only recently, started to carry my 580ex recently along with my DSLR, and the extra flash is kind of a drag. I would love to have in body flash for those times...

I dont even own a point and shoot. Heck, I carry my DSLR more than most people carry their point and shoot.

Edit: btw, my lens collection is nice and small, I usually only carry one lens with me, either the 50 or 24-70 depending on where I go.

I do that too ... it's rare that I'm without my 5D II and my 50mm! On vacations I couldn't not bring it ... point and shoot goes to my parents

300 of my images were taken with my Samsung Galaxy S3...Has made me start to think...

Which is why when I take my family to Maui next month, I'll only be bringing my Samsung Galaxy S2 (external link) and my Panasonic Lumix FZ150 (external link). :)

A couple years ago I took about 4,000 - 5,000 images using my 7D and 500L. Its all in the session/shoot. That was a 4 day vacation no less (hawk migration).

Don't have many lenses anymore, but from now on I'll prob just take my 24-70 II with 5D3 and be done. Maybe my 14 as well. But I tend to leave the 70-200 at home unless I need the range.

Jon, I recall a year ago, or less, you had a similar thread going where you had just been shooting with your 85mm. Which goes to show that we need a big bag full of cool lenses to satisfy whatever our latest fancy is. ;) It's a real interesting subject and hope you get a lot more thoughtful replies.

Steve's idea of primarily using the 24-70 II really appeals to me. That sure looks like an excellent lens and zoom range.

most of my long vacation, I only took with me 5DMkII + 50L + flash, and a crumpler 5 million dollars home.

i think that my vacations are about the snap shot first and photography second.
though with that said, i really like having the "power" of the 7d vs my old P&S.
I take my 7d, 10-22, and 24-105 and 430 exii for the majority of my outings (both real vacations, as well as short day trips)
unless i think that the majority of the photography will be macro - where I add the 100 and extension tubes. But even with all that I still weigh in less than 10kg bag.
granted i don't have the long list of high level glass that many in this thread have...I am more than pleased...
Later on, if I have a special interest or whatever, i can rent/borrow or buy a lens for that specific goal...but i don't see that expectation in my family vacations.
but i only got my first DSLR 2-3 years ago. maybe after 15 years, i will look solely to the P&S options...

Ultimately this comes down to practicality. If you're alone or with your spouse or adult friends, sure bring your 2-3 bodies, 7 lenses, flash, tripod, and Pelican cases.

But if you've got kids crawling all over you, strollers to push uphill, etcetera, sensibility (and the good of your marriage) takes over and you just bring your phone and/or P&S.

On my recent Europe trip I decided to cut way down on the gear, ended up taking the 5D, 24-105, 28, and the 40. I pretty much used the 24-105 exclusively during the day with the 40 for those times I wanted a light setup (e.g. going to the beach) and the 28 at night.

In the future I'll probably get rid of the 28 and get a fast 50 which is my preferred focal length but other that it worked very well. It felt a lot better than taking a huge amount of gear and I don't think I missed out on much.

Heading to the big island Hawaii on Friday for 2 weeks, bringing everything with me! Luckily I only have a 5DII, 17-40, 24-105 and 50 1.4. A pretty manageable kit with a 3 year old to entertain.

lol, I've got three kids, and the secret is the messenger bag. It doubles as a diaper bag even though my kids dont wear diapers anymore. I still use it to bring wet wipes, the occasional bib, maybe some crayons and paper. My standard gear is still the 5D2 + 24-70 + 580ex... you've got the luxury of a stroller, just hang it off the stroller. I regret not taking more photos of my eldest, so I make a habit of keeping my camera along.

Lol, I don't know how ppl who spend so much money on DSLR equipment would advocate leaving it at home when travelling... although it's definitely their right to do so, I personally wouldn't advocate bringing a P&S, but rather like others suggest bringing a more limited selection of gear (1 body+1-2 lenses), and that missing shots/not having the perfect lens for the shot just isn't the end of the world.

My daughter shoots everything on ner many trips with her cell phone. She doesn't want to carry anything extra and always has her cell phone with her.

That is just fine because the type of picture she is prone to shoot doesn't need anything more sophisticated than a cell phone...
