hello everyone and merry christmas!

I got my 350d probably 4 weeks ago, I been shooting like crazy working the creative zones, but i find my shots kinda boring since I`m working with the kit lens. I`m going to the world cup in the summer and I`m wondering which lens I should get next, considering I`ll be shooting some of the games as an spectator, but also I would like to get a lens that would work for portraits , I`m new at this so i really need advice

The new 70-300 IS might be a good addition. Not super-fast aperture, but it has quickly gained a very good reputation in its short time out.

World Cup in Germany? CONGRATS!!!!:D
Which lens? Hmmmm.... that depends on which section in the stadium you will be seated. I agree, lens with IS probably help alot in that situation.

Actually I have seen quite many creative pictures taken with the kit lens.

How much money are you talking? If you want a zoom, 70-300 IS is new and the reviews on this lens are good. I'd read up on that one. I don't have such lenses because I don't do a lot of stadium work, but I have the 85mm f1.8 and that's a great portrait lens.

Sigma's 100-300 f/4 is a damn good lens, and pretty good deal for the price(although still at around 700 USD)

well i`m talking about 700 dlls, and i still have to consider the lighting over there, i don`t know yet if the games will be at night and since i don`t know that much, i don`t know if i will need a external flash as well.

A flash will not likely help at the distances you will encounter. I would get the 70-200 f2.8 L if most shots are inside or at night. If the games are in daylight I would get the 100-400 L or the 400 L f5.6 prime. For portraits I like the 24-70 f2.8. Iam sure the 24-105 f4 would also be good. If you want a prime I would get the 50 f1.4. The 35 L or the 80 L are excellent also I have heard.

With this information more questions had pop up. like:

What is a L lens?
what the difference between a zoom lens and a telescope lens?
Are all the lenses autofocus?

an L lens is canon's professional line of lenses.

A zoom lens is just a lens that does not have a fixed focal length. They can go from X mm to Y mm. Like the 70-300mm they mentioned.

A telephoto lens is a lens that has a long focal length - typically above 50mm. A zoom lens can also be telephoto.

Just about any lens ppl discuss in here will be Autofocus.

One of the best all around lenses are 70-200s either from canon or sigma.

What is a L lens?

Canon's marketing fluff. It's designated for professional use and the build quality is nice. Oh yeah... the picture quality is also superb.

A lot of them a big and white, look sexy too.

Haven't heard of a telescope lens before.

Are all the lenses autofocus?

All EF canon lenses are autofocus. Also all EF lenses from the third party manufacturers like tamron, sigma, tokina are autofocus. You can also mount old lenses like pentax, zeiss, nikon and others on your camera.

Sports are a tough thing to shoot, but with 700 (is that USD? ) you have some freedom. I'd recommend sigma 70-200 f/2.8

Or from here:

You'll be able to use it for sports, for low light shooting, with your film camera, with teleconverters and the optical quality is very good too. It has pretty much everything you need to get you into the world of telephoto.

Or save the money and study the light and its properties. ;)

but i find my shots kinda boring since I`m working with the kit lens.

The kit lens is hardly the problem. It can do a lot, just learn to use it.

Be worth checking out any admission rules for camera gear. Often P&S is fine but security (and marketing!!!!) people get a bit edgy when they see someone with a DSLR and a Bazooka style white (or black) lens. Something like the Panasonic Lumix FZ20 or 30 gives Image Stabilization, 12x (huge!) zoom and Leica lens quality in a reasonably small package. I just got one for my travelling kit (had two others previously) and you should get some top shots if light is decent. It's a thought ...

Firstly, here's a list of kick-off times so you can get some idea of what you'll need for a given time of day. Bear in mind it should be light until 9pm or so in Europe in Mid-June...

Kick-off times (external link)

Now, i really don't want to put a dampener on things, but have you actually checked out if you can take a camera into the games? I'm predicting total security paranoia at any game featuring England or the USA and cameras, backpacks etc might not be welcome.

I should be in Germany myself around that time, but not for the football. I'm off to the Nurburgring for a 24-hour race followed by another visit to some friends in the Czech Republic. Hope you enjoy yourself as much as i know i will ;)
