I have an older version of the 50mm f1.8 metal body. a year ago while I was moving my bag. I did not realize the zipper was undone and it fell out a couple of feet. The manual/AF switch popped out and came loose.

I thought it was just loose and pop it back in. The auto-focus doesn't seem to work anymore but I can get by using it as manual. Until the other day I noticed that even when it wass in focus viewing from the viewfinder. The end image was OOF. The bottomline is that I am now getting inconsistencies with this lens.

So I was thinking of sending it for repair. I have not done this so I have no clue how much it would cost. I don't feel like replacing it with the new because I feel that this has better feel than the new ones. But if the cost of repair is more than the price of a new one. Should I still go and repair it? I feel it's such a waste to just junk it.

On the other hand. I saw a 50mm f1.4 for $390 CDN. maybe I should forget about it and just get this one.

When you popped in the M/AF switch, it is possible that you didn't get it in the right position to engage the little pin that operates the focus mechanism. You could try popping it out yourself and making sure you put it back together so the pin is correctly aligned. Or, it would be a simple fix at a repair shop.

As for the OOF problem, it doesn't make sense. Maybe your dipoter adjument is not set correctly?

Try using Liveview to manually focus and see if that helps.

That's what I did but I will try it again. As far as the VF diopter , I'll experiment when I get home. Supposed to be working right now;)

Thanks for your reply

Try moving the silver part forward without the M/AF switch in place to see if that gets the AF working again.

Those switches are the most fragile part of the lens. My switch cover simply fell off about a year ago during gentle use, the little plastic tines having broken. I ended up having to glue it back together. Continues to work fine.

Because of the demand for the mark I lenses, you might simply sell it, as-is. I've seen them go for around $200 in working order, so if you could get $100 in almost working order, you'd be on your way to a 1.4.

I plan to hang onto mine, simply because the 1.8 is better for infrared photography, whereas the 1.4 is reputed to generate hot spots.

if the above fixes don't work, i'm not sure where you could send it to get it fixed...canon won't touch it, so it'd have to be a third party. I wouldn't spend more than the cost of a new 50mm f1.8 to fix it though

the AF/MF switch popped off on the first one i bought, that my brother uses, we just lined up the tab with the hole, and super-glued it back on...it's been fine since...

Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to take some samples before replying.

Thanks for the illustration Mike. Because of it, I found that the copper tab on mine were bent therefore not making any contact when I switch from MF/AF. As soon as I bent it to the appropriate angle, AF is now working.

A bit more information:
I neglected to include on my original post that I wear glasses (4.75+). On top of that I just started using bi-focals. This could be my problem :o

Here's a shot with bi-focals, diopter adjusted, MF thru viewfinder. All three images focus point was the head. I know it's not sharp because I used such a narrow opening (... my guess). But I am content that I don't have to junk this lens.:D Thanks to all that replied. It was a confidence builder.

This one was shot with my outdated non-bifocals. diopter re-adjusted, MF thru viewfinder.

This one was taken AF.

Just an update. I just read a thread regarding oof on viewfinder. It's interesting and I think this is what is happening. This member just explained the problem better than me ;)
