Looking to get out and shoot some landscapes and was hoping for some good suggestions for locations in either Northern NJ, Pennsylvania, or New York

Especially looking for changing leaves, mountain scenes and streams/waterfalls. Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Are you talking about the entire state of PA? If you have no restrictions, then I would suggest you check out Valley Forge National Park, Ricketts Glen State Park, and Marsh Creek State Park.

Bushkill Falls is along the PA / NJ border. I stopped there years back while on a vacation. Someday I would like to go back with my camera.

In lower NY, there is Harriman Park. It has mountains, streams, lakes, and wonderful foliage, fall or otherwise. There are other vistas as well. Google map it and you will find days of different types of shots close to where you are.
Don't forget Sterling Park, it is just over the NJ border - althoough not as nice as Harriman.

just a few of my thoughts...

•Bergen County Ramapo Mountains County Park
From Rt 17 take 202 not sure if it's west or south, but it will be one of them, anyway heading towards Oakland.

There is a trail in there with a brook along side of it, that will take you to the top of the Mtn where there is a very large lake. Use to hike it quite often with my two German Shepherds, the dogs knew the reward was the lake on top , where they could swim..

Nice opportunity for leaves, mountain scenes and streams/waterfalls. It has it all.
If you decide to go, post some pictures..

Happy Hiking

What's your range within NY? Do you hike at all? If you hike, one of my favorite fall hikes is the loop at Sam's Point Preserve. It has a lot of bang for your buck - the ice caves, a waterfall, brilliant red bushes in fall, a nice patch of birch trees with fall color, views from High Point, etc. I have a gallery posted from a fall hike two years ago:

Sam's Point (external link)

Some of my other favorite walks and hikes are Breakneck Ridge (Hudson Highlands), Vanderbilt Mansion (Hyde Park, easy), Ferncliff Firetower (Rhinebeck, easy); Sage's Ravine, Race Mtn, Brace Mtn, Bash Bish Falls in the Taconics; Wittenburg, Twin, Indian Head, Kaaterskill Falls, Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskills; Gertrude's Nose in Minnewaska.

Great post Katherine! Thanks very much. I'm looking for more photo taking opportunities than I am hiking although I might not get the great shots without hoofing it a bit. My bones are getting a little tired for anything too rugged especially when carrying my photo gear.

A nice flat hike or bike ride to a beautiful lake would definitely catch my attention if you know of such a place. And by the way you have some excellent photos in your galleries, I especially like the Italy ones. You and your husband and daughter seem like quite the adventurists and suddenly I'm feeling like I need to get up from my chair and go do something worth while. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

For flat hikes or easier walks I would highly recommend Minnewaska (I have some fall pictures in my gallery). Just arrive early because the parking lot fills up quickly in fall. Minnewaska Lake is right by the parking lot and it's an easy stroll around the lake. Many other trails to choose from (mix of trails and carriage roads) and with little elevation gain.

Nearby Mohonk also offers some easy hikes, but I haven't been there in ages because we don't like the nearly $20 per person to get in. But it is a beautiful spot.

Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskills is a nice spot. After 9/11 they closed one of the main roads across the reservoir and it's open to pedestrian traffic. North Lake (also in the Catskills) is easily accessible (fee required) and there are some flast, easy walks/hikes from North Lake along the Escarpment Trail that have great views. Kaaterskill Falls is a short hike (some rocks and small elevation gain, but short) - this is near North Lake, so easy to combine. These are both close to Hunter Mountain - they might run the chairlifts in the fall if you want to ride up the mountain for some views (I think from the chairlift it's a short hike to the fire tower - of course great views from that).

Bear Mountain has some easy walks/hikes, lakes, etc. We don't hike much there, so can't offer specific suggestions.

You could easily spend a day along the Hudson River. Easy walks at Vanderbilt, FDR, and Mills Mansion, the Walkway in Poughkeepsie, Burger Hill, and the Ferncliff Firetower. There are also many orchards and farms in the area, which are always great in the fall.

Bash Bish Fall is a great one if you are in the Taconics. Easy walk (maybe one mile each way?) to the falls - very pretty.

I love this time of year - enjoy!

Thanks again Katherine. I just went back to look at more of your photos and I am in awe. There are some great photos there! I can get lost in the Favorites folder and highly recommend that other viewers here check it out too. Question for you.........do you ever just stay home?

Wow this is creepy. One of my Facebook friends just posted this warning about Harriman State Park on his wall but he had no idea that I'm looking for places to shoot. Very strange.

Thanks for your kind words! And for staying home - not if we can help it. :-D

Oh yea, I heard about the Harriman State Park thing. A friend of mine posted on Facebook as they saw a lot of helicopters there when they were hiking. Come to find out the guy killed his daughter in law and went into hiding in the park. He's a retired ranger, so he knows the territory well. They said he's armed and dangerous. Didn't realize they had issued a warning for people to not go there. Hope they catch him soon - scary!
