I tried to search this out here a couple times, but I didn't find anything specific.

I can copy what is apparently the direct link to my image but in preview, I don't get the image.. just the link. :)

Yep, I use Picasa.

go to your picture in picasa, right click and click "copy image location" Then when you want to insert it into the post, click the 'insert image' button, and paste that link.

A note- the size that picture will be displayed is part of the link, that varies on what size you are viewing at the time you right click and click "copy image location". here is an example of two different links of the same picture, you can see what changes:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com …/AAAAAAAACo4/hENcoCYMx6c/ (external link)s912/sm2.jpg

I usually go in there and change it to whatever size looks good, but be aware, you have to pick the right numbers or they won't display at all. I usually fiddle with it till it works.

Hope that helps!

Also on the right hand side there is a "Link this image" text you can click. Then you select the size you want and there is a checkbox that is image only. Then you can copy paste the link in the embed image box between the IMG tags on the forum.
