From the website:

Tandent’s Trillien technology is transforming the way artists manipulate and use real world imagery to create game content and special effects for film. Trillien reverse engineers an image into the components that formed it: reflectance and illumination. Reflectance, or albedo, is the inherent color of the material, while the illumination is the light energy falling upon the surface. By separating an image into its two intrinsic components, Trillien gives artists and photographers unprecedented capabilities to manipulate the image as though they were manipulating the original scene.

Lightbrush is designed to give artists full control over the Trillien separation process. With Lightbrush, texture artists, content creators, and photographers can independently edit and manipulate the surface colors and the lighting of real-world imagery. This technology from the frontiers of computer vision enables modes of image editing previously possible only with rendered 3D graphics.

Ummmmm, totally badass. This is like having superpowers.

Too bad it's only available for Mac right now. :( Oh yeah, there is the issue with the price........

Other than that it looks pretty bad ass. They need to make it a Ps plug-in!

yeah, this is not your garden variety effects plug in. This is a computer vision application that is a pretty sophisticated approach to a physical decomposition of a regular old raw or HDR image into its surface properties, reflection and shadow components. A little too expensive for an occasional "how do I get rid of dappled sun hot spots on my open shade portrait subjects."

I sent them an email to get a better idea of the workflow and toolset, beyond the before and after images. I'll report back if I get an answer. Ideally I'd like to get a trial before I consider dropping the money, but I already can envision several applications for work, so... business expense!

PS - how do I get a subscription to Internet Tough Guy magazine?

After digging around a little, I found this little treasure trove of information, including a User Manual and tutorial videos - surprisingly there was no link to these on the page given in the URL above.
