Last night some punk decided to break into my car and steal whatever they could find. Unfortunately I had left my camera bag in there with my Canon 24-105 and Sigma 50 1.4. I have the serial from the Sigma box, but I can't tell which number on the Canon box is the serial number.

0344B002(AA) or (21)01128803

Can anyone help me identify which is the serial?

No prob... the serial numbers for just about all big-ticket Canon boxed goodies follow "(21)". So your serial is 01128803. I'm sorry to hear of your woes. Nothing worse than getting violated by some faceless scumbags. :( I hope your lenses are either recovered swiftly or you're insured...

that's bad, really bad if you had a Sigma that worked. Insurance should cover them, but keep an eye on your local CL and see if they pop up.

I filed a report with the police and a claim with the insurance. All told they took about $2300 worth when you include my flash, filters, and other items int the car. Believe me, I am watching CL, but I doubt these losers even know what they have. Most likely they will try to pawn it, which would be best since local pawn shops are required to check serial #s with the police.

Also check CL of nearby cities. I've heard stories of people doing that and finding stolen items. Good luck!

Ahw damn, good luck with the insurance (and the wait it comes with). I've recently lost all my gear so I know your feelings. Try to turn it over in to something positive, at least that's what I did (and succeded).

Totally know how you feel, because my apartment was broken into a few years back. Cameras, lenses, computers... I was fortunate to have purchased renter's insurance, as well as storing some of my other gear in the back of the upper shelf in my closet. Two years later in another town, a buddy of mine also had a break-in where he lost his 1DsII...

We were never able to recover anything... nothing ever showed up on Craigslist, either. I was less vigilant because I relied on insurance, but my buddy didn't and that caused him to vengefully scour Craigslist and eBay.

When storing anything in the car, put it in the trunk. Another friend of mine had his laptop and a $15,000 violin stolen out of the backseat of his car.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Thing is I never store anything in my car. Last night was a perfect storm. I am building a play set for my son's birthday so I have the garage full of equipment. I was in a hurry to get working on it after work because of the fading sunlight and rain forecast for this weekend. I took my camera out and brought it inside, but forgot the case with the lenses. I apparently left it unlocked and I had just removed the bulb from my security light because it burned out and i needed to buy a replacement.

Now, I don't have any good lenses for my son's birthday coming up on the 8th. I have my 70-300 which was attached to the camera and my 18-55 which has broken AF.

Here in the UK we can register serial numbers with Canon Prof. Services, even if not a member. If the new owner tries to register something that CPS know is stolen then they can inform the police.

I have insurance, with a $1000 deductible, which is basically the cost of the 24-105. I wish I had the cash to spare that I could just laugh off that much, but it's not that simple.

Apparently my Allstate agent misled me. This would be covered under my home insurance, and my deductible is $2000 and a claim would raise my rates. So I am screwed.
