Mere attempt to sound like the old communist propaganda: Proletariats of all countries - unite! But really I wanted to get a few folks who own this monsterous piece of beauty for a discussion.

Questions I would like to ask would be this:

--> do you find pulling the lens from 300 down is nearly not as smooth as from a mid-point (this may very well be applicable to 100-400 owners too);
--> how's the image quality on the lens overall?
--> what other lenses do you tend to use (where/why/etc.)?
... and other interesting topics that can be discussed with this potentially versatile and expensive lens.

Thank you, Chancellor.

Can't speak for the 28-300, but I do have the 100-400. There is a change in force required through some parts of the zoom range as compared to others. It is probably due to the increased or decreased movement of the several lens groups that varies as you change focal lengths. As you zoom from one end to another, some groups move farther in the first part of the zoom range and then their movement tapers, while other lens groups may move more during the middle or later parts of the range. I would think that a lens that zooms from wide-angle to long telephoto would have some significant changes taking place as you pump the zoom.

Thank you for continuing this thread. I've been looking at this lens, drooling, and need to know more.

Seanbell, not sure I know of any old 28-300?.. Unless you were referring to non-Canon 28-300's? Yes, I'm referring to the 28-300L that came out in early 2004.

Tom W, thanks. So I take it you feel a difference when pulling from 400?

Seanbell, did you feel difference in pulling the lens from 300mm compare to any mid-point, or it just my copy? Thanks.

condyk, I was about to go with P&S, but they were all too small for my hands ;)

Now, having this lens doesn't necessarily have to preclude one from owning and using many others, as I'm planning to accumulate on my collection. Can this lens cover a wide range and need - absolutely, but so can the SUV drive you everywhere, doesn't mean one wouldn't want a luxury sedan, convertible, sport car, etc.

Pictures are taken, will need to shrink in size and upload.
