so i now have my new 5d2 and i have a 17-40L.

im stoked to be able to take this thing out in the weather and not have to rush to cover it from every drop.

realistically how much moisture can it really handle? obviously im not going snorkeling with it, but i'd like to know how much it can take.

I've been in some pretty nasty downpours with mine, but with a 16-35 which is weather sealed.

I wouldn't worry about it too much - you'll generally know when the camera is getting too much water. (as long as the water is running off the camera and not pooling - is my safe point personally)

With the 5D2, you take your chances under any condition where moisture might get onto the camera. I had mine stop functioning from mist generated by a waterfall. If you want to shoot in the rain, I suggest you get a rain cover. Water damage is not covered under warranty and typically costs a lot to get fixed. Sure you might be lucky shooting in wet conditions...but then you might not be so lucky one day.

Remember to complete the weather sealing on the 17-40mm Canon recommends a filter.
The main area of weather sealing is around the lens mount, so make sure you use a lens with a gasket and filter when shooting in the rain.

I don't think a 5d could handle heavy rain

5D II is not weather sealed very well in my experience. It seems that it is 1D > 7D > 40D > 5D.

Light rain will not really effect the camera, but add in high humidity and you can run into problems. The menu button on my 5D II was killed my rain/humidity and had to be sent in to be replaced.

call Canon tech department and hear what they say. :)

I really would love to see an OFFICIAL video of Canon testing the various cameras, they could probably say that have some seals, but saying and proving are very different, and let alone honoring a warranty.

I have read that my 60D has a bit of weather seals but mine failed with a drop of sweat, exactly where those seals are supposed to be so... I would not trust any camera unless it's official.

What about 60D? Is it more sealed or less that 7D for example? Are newest cameras sealed better or not?

hmmm my experience is not too much. I dropped my 5D II in a tidal pool and it was about 1/4 in the water for less than 2 seconds. The camera never stopped functioning, but the internal display was garbled.
I am now spending about $500 to get it back to it's original state. So I think a light misty rain you would be fine, but not too much water. I have also been told that the weather sealing for the 5D II has more to do with dust than water.
