Who's in charge, me or the G1-X?!

I recently bought a G1-X to use when I didn't want to lug the 7D around and my first chance to really get to know it was on holiday last week.

During that week I pretty much left it on AV but one of the problems I found was that if the exposure went over 1 second the shutter speed would continue to show as 1" in red. I turned the safety shift off but the only way I could seem to get a longer exposure was by switching to manual.

The manual explains that it is because I have 'deviated from standard exposure' and need to adjust the aperture until it goes white but it's my camera and I'll deviate if I want to!

Anyone else come across this and am I missing something?

It is a "known issue" for the G series. Here's a blog from Gordon Buck on it;

Thanks Dennis

That's annoying but at least now I can stop trying to find out how to turn that off and work around it. Canon make some strange decisions at times... I wonder sometimes if they actually know who buys their cameras and what they want!

Well thats a coincidence, I took some darkish river shots early this evening and set it on bracketing. Just checked the shutter speed, have got 0.8s 1.0s and 1.0s, must remember that for next time.

Same goes for me too and coincidentally it was dark river shots as well. Interesting and useful information. Thanks!

Update, took some more dark river shots, set up manually for shutter speed and aperture value, everything OK back in control.

Yeah using manual seems to be the only way to do it... ridiculous really but not the end of the world I suppose

If you wait until it gets even darker, autobracket will deliver three identical exposures, usually underexposed, if you are in aperture priority. The workaround for me is to do manual bracketing using the EV comp. dial (and then go home).

I know that the EV comp dial on the G1X can be rotated when in Manual exposure mode. However, the actual exposure does not change -- check it out.

been using G1X on travel daily past month. low light focus lock and shooting moving subjects are the biggest issues personally, very frustrating sometimes. high ISO performance is amazing, although had generation or two older camera before. size is not dSLR-big which is good, but I think there are better travel cameras than this unless Canon improves it on firmware (rather than just bring G2X).
